Mannheim is located where the Rhine and Neckar rivers meet. The Water Tower is the city’s landmark; the Baroque Palace and the Art Nouveau ensemble at Friedrichsplatz make their own architectural statements. This gives you several starting points for planning your trip: art and architectural history, technology, urban culture and the Rhine landscape.

Mannheim

Palace, Friedrichsplatz and Art

With its 440-metre-long façade, Mannheim’s Baroque Palace is one of the largest palaces in Europe. The ensemble at Friedrichsplatz includes the Water Tower, a garden, water basins, the adjoining festival hall and the Kunsthalle art museum. Together, they are considered one of Germany’s most beautiful Art Nouveau complexes. The Baroque palace façade and the Art Nouveau ensemble thus offer different perspectives on Mannheim’s architectural history.

The Kunsthalle’s collection also offers a broad perspective across time: it spans German Romanticism, French and German Impressionism, Expressionism, New Objectivity and contemporary art. Visitors who organise their visit by period will find both older and more recent art movements represented here.

The history of technology and urban art

The TECHNOSEUM presents 200 years of technological and social history. Demonstrations and hands-on exhibits complement practical insights into optics, mechanics and electrical engineering. A historic tender locomotive is part of the experience too: the “Eschenau,” built in 1896, runs on steam several times a day from the museum station to the open-air area, sounding its steam whistle along the way.

As of September 2026, STADT.WAND.KUNST turns Mannheim’s public spaces into a freely accessible museum of urban art. The project map shows works created so far as part of the initiative; the map includes works completed through August 2026. Urban art thus complements museum visits with works in the cityscape.

Rhine floodplains, parks and weekly market

Reißinsel is one of the last naturally occurring Rhine floodplains in the Upper Rhine region. It is accessible from 1 July to the end of February; a signposted circular route starts at the “Kuckucksinsel” entrance. Seasonal access may also be affected by temporary notices. Check these before your visit, especially if you are planning a specific trip there during a longer stay.

On the Rhine, at the level of the Lindenhof district, a spacious park stretches along the river, with promenades, large lawns for relaxing and old floodplain woodland. The area is designated a landscape conservation area. The Neue Parkmitte in Luisenpark includes a new penguin enclosure, the South America House, a large aviary and an underwater world themed “Around the World in 80 Steps.”

The Hauptmarkt is a weekly market in central Mannheim. The Old Town Hall, the fountain monument and the historic market square provide its backdrop. Market details may change, so it’s best to check them before your visit.

City history and travel planning

The Karl Drais Tour follows the historic route travelled by Karl Drais on 12 June 1817 on his legendary “two-wheeled running machine” and leads to historic sites in and around Mannheim. City tours and sightseeing rides also take in historic places and showcase the history and present-day character of this diverse city on the Rhine and Neckar.

Festivals are also part of the city’s events calendar: Mannheim hosts Enjoy Jazz, Time Warp and Maifeld Derby, for example, attracting people from all over Europe. If you are planning your trip around an event, it’s helpful to check the relevant dates.

Mannheim’s main railway station handles 626 trains a day, including 176 long-distance trains, and is the largest railway hub in southwestern Germany after Stuttgart. These operating figures may change over time. When choosing a hotel in Mannheim, your priorities can help guide your decision, whether that means art and architecture, technology, events or a visit to the Rhine floodplains.
