Mannheim offers a range of cultural and green attractions to consider when planning a stay. If you are looking for a hotel in Mannheim, you can first consider whether architecture and museums, parks, or routes through the city and surrounding countryside should shape your stay. The places and activities below offer concrete points of reference to help you decide.

Mannheim

Water Tower, Palace and Churches

Mannheim’s water tower was built in 1889 by Gustav Halmhuber, a Stuttgart architect who also contributed to the construction of the Berlin Reichstag. The structure is 60 metres tall, has a diameter of 19 metres and holds 2,000 cubic metres of water. At dusk, the brightly illuminated water features at the tower create a distinctive atmosphere.

The Baroque Palace rises in the centre of Mannheim, surrounded by the city’s squares. Visitors can join guided tours of its magnificent halls and palace museum; check the current tour dates before your trip. The Jesuit Church offers a different architectural accent: it was built to designs by Alessandro Galli da Bibiena, modelled on “Il Gesù” in Rome. Its magnificent interior includes, among other things, a high altar, a ceiling fresco and works of art by Paul Egell and Peter Anton von Verschaffelt.

Museums and Guided Tours

The TECHNOSEUM in Mannheim showcases 200 years of technological and social history. Interactive stations on science and technology combine information with an interactive journey through time. The museum offers programmes for schools and for children, teenagers and adults, including a Robo-Contest and an escape room. At the TECHNOclubs, children and teenagers can build marble runs with loop-the-loops, experiment with 3D printers or make lipstick. As club activities and programmes may change, it is a good idea to check the current offerings.

The Reiss-Engelhorn Museums preserve more than 1.2 million objects of cultural heritage. The Museum Weltkulturen takes visitors from the beginnings of humanity in the Stone Age through the Celts, Romans and Early Middle Ages to millennia-old cultural treasures from Ancient Egypt. The Zeughaus Museum houses collections on art and cultural history, theatre and literary history, as well as Frankenthal porcelain, photography and antiquity. Guided tours of current exhibitions are usually in German and mostly take place at weekends. Private tours can be booked; English- or French-speaking guides may be available on request. Check booking details and language in advance.

Parks and Outdoor Activities

Luisenpark in Mannheim covers 42 hectares. Visitors can observe exotic and native animals there; Gondoletta rides are also available, though their operation may vary seasonally. A special attraction in the park is the Chinese Tea House: it is the largest of its kind in Europe and one of the few outside China.

The 21-hectare Herzogenriedpark is a local recreation centre with opportunities for picnicking and barbecuing, as well as boules, basketball, football, tennis and table tennis. The area figures give a comparison of the size of the two parks; the activities mentioned distinguish their respective focuses. This can help you choose a park to suit your interests without confusing their offerings.

Tours and Routes in Mannheim

The Mannheim sightseeing tour connects the city’s main attractions and starts and ends at Mannheim Central Station. The nature tour follows the Rhine promenade into Mannheim’s Waldpark and the Reißinsel nature reserve. Route details for both local tours may change, so check them before planning. The 410-kilometre Neckar Valley Cycle Route runs from Villingen-Schwenningen to Mannheim, where the Neckar flows into the Rhine. It is therefore a long-distance cycle route with Mannheim as its endpoint, while the two tours mentioned above run through the city and its surroundings.
