Culture, churches and wine-growing

In the Boxberg district of Angeltürn, the former fortified church contains six early Gothic wall frescoes in the choir’s window niches. This offers two distinct points of interest: the historic type of church and its precisely located painted decoration, which may appeal to travellers interested in church architecture and mural painting.

The Frankendom in Wölchingen is a striking late Romanesque church, also known as the “Cathedral of Baden Franconia.” A different architectural style is represented by the Renaissance moated castle in Boxberg’s Unterschüpf district; it is used mainly as a school for children with speech and language disorders. For travel planning, these are two distinct types of building: late Romanesque church architecture in Wölchingen and a Renaissance building in Unterschüpf.

The history of wine-growing draws attention to UnterschĂĽpf in the SchĂĽpfer Grund: the village was shaped by wine-growing and wine trading for centuries. Following extensive vineyard consolidation and the construction of a frost-protection sprinkler system in the early 1970s, wine-growing resumed in the two villages. The story thus spans a long-established economic activity and its later revival.

Lake district, outdoor swimming pool and paths

The lake district in Boxberg offers a different kind of outdoor attraction. It includes a lake with waterside planting, a wet meadow, numerous footpaths, a viewing pavilion and a wooden walkway across the lake. The paths and walkway are features for getting around, while the wet meadow and planted shoreline also draw attention to the surroundings of the water.

The Mama Muh reading trail in Boxberg Nature and Adventure Park is freely accessible and can be visited during the day. Check local information when making specific plans.

The Schweigern pavilion has a viewing platform overlooking Schweigern and the surrounding landscapes. It can be rented from the Schweigern Beautification Association for private events.

The Umpfertalbad is open seasonally. Its swimming pool measures 25 × 12 metres and has 1-metre and 3-metre diving facilities. The non-swimmers’ pool measures 25 × 8 metres and has a slide; there is also a toddlers’ pool. If the outdoor swimming pool is a key part of your plans, check the current seasonal dates in advance.

The GrĂĽnkernland cycling route starts and ends at the railway underpass in Schweigern. The underpass is therefore the designated start and finish point, where you can incorporate the route into your itinerary.

Events throughout the year

The “Schüpfer Weinfest” takes place every year on the last weekend in August. Boxberg also holds an annual pumpkin festival with a market in September. The events fall in late summer and early autumn; the September event explicitly includes the market as part of the programme. If an event is the reason for your trip, check the latest information for the relevant year before planning your stay.
