Culture, History and Museums
The Tacheles Trail is a series of stations commemorating Hermann Umfrid and Jewish life in Niederstetten. It also stands for valuing civic courage, compassion and tolerance in community life. The historic town centre is home to attractive half-timbered houses.
For independent exploration, the Niederstetten audio guide leads visitors to historic buildings and sites. QR codes provide information in German or English. Niederstetten also offers a historic town tour.
Haltenbergstetten Castle is a three-storey complex with four wings. It was built largely between 1550 and 1572 in Late Gothic and Renaissance styles. The styles and architectural form give the castle a distinctive place alongside the half-timbered houses in the historic town centre.
The Wine Press and Viticulture Museum is housed in Niederstetten’s wine press, built in 1803. Around 200 exhibits show the conditions under which the area’s winegrowers and vintners produced and processed wine in the 19th century. The focus is therefore on winemaking in the past and how the wine was processed.
The Village Lockup preserves original 19th-century furnishings and offers a detailed insight into the everyday lives of Niederstetten’s residents. The Albert Sammt Museum provides a different perspective: it houses an extensive Zeppelin exhibition and explores the life and work of airship commander Albert Sammt, who was born in Niederstetten. This also includes his service as an officer aboard the ill-fated Hindenburg.
Nature and Exercise Trails
The nature trail in Niederstetten is a 4.5 km circular route with 34 information boards. The landscape along the trail includes orchards, dry grassland, stone embankments, stream floodplains and the castle forest. The boards and variety of landscape features define the trail’s focus on natural history.
The forest trail is a 1.2 km circular walk that can also be enjoyed without difficulty with a pushchair, wheelchair or walking frame. The Niederstetten fitness trail runs for around 1 km over Castle Hill and has 12 stations with mobility and strengthening exercises. The trails therefore differ in length and purpose: natural history on the 4.5 km loop, an accessible 1.2 km circular walk, and exercises along the trail of around 1 km.
The Rossmarkt as a Reason to Travel
The traditional Niederstetten Rossmarkt takes place every year and centres on horses and their presentation. The programme includes around 100 horses of all breeds, an equestrian show at Frickentalplatz, a large market in Lange Gasse and numerous special exhibitions in the town centre. If the Rossmarkt is important to your travel plans, check the specific event dates before your trip.
