Schliengen: Castles, Wine and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Schliengen
If you are looking for a hotel in Schliengen, historic buildings, winegrowing and hikes may influence your choice of destination. The municipality offers a range of possibilities: castles with different architectural histories, trails with named route features and a long tradition of winegrowing. This gives you the opportunity to decide whether you would like your stay to focus more on cultural history or outdoor activities.
Castles with a history of their own
Entenstein Castle is considered Schliengen’s most historically significant village building. It originated as a medieval residential tower surrounded by water; in the 16th century, it developed into its present form. The transformation from residential tower to its current form makes the building’s history traceable across two periods.
Bürgeln Castle is a Baroque landmark of the Markgräflerland; the present Baroque building dates from 1762. Visits are only possible as part of a guided tour. Groups can arrange visits outside regular hours. As visiting arrangements may change, check them before your trip. Bürgeln can be planned as a cultural outing if a guided tour suits your stay.
Hiking and views
The Hochblauen area is part of the municipality and offers an observation tower as well as hiking trails. In suitable weather, the view from there extends as far as the Alps, the Black Forest and the Vosges. Consider the distant views a weather-dependent possibility, not a certainty.
The Bürgeln circular trail combines a defined distance and timeframe: the hike is 14 kilometres long and takes about 4.5 hours, with 320 metres of ascent and descent. It passes through forest, highlights Bürgeln Castle and the medieval ruins of Sausenburg, and offers views towards the Eggenertal valley and Kandern. The 7.5-kilometre Schliengen–Obereggenen hike passes through Steinenkreuzle and a nature reserve. The two routes therefore differ both in length and in their named landscape and cultural features.
The Eggenertal circular trail is about 12 kilometres long and suitable for all-terrain strollers and mountain bikes. Schliengen’s cycling routes use developed cycle paths, paved farm tracks and side roads. These details give you concrete points of reference for considering route length, path type and preferred mode of transport when choosing a tour.
Winegrowing and church art
Winegrowing in Schliengen has been documented since 1147. The vineyards in the municipality and its districts cover 250 hectares. The history of the church in Liel adds its own cultural note: its Late Gothic choir is considered an artistic highlight, and the church served as the burial place of the Lords of Baden.
