Liel offers two themes to consider when planning a trip: the history of Liel Castle and cycling routes that include the town in a loop or a longer route. The castle’s history stretches from the former seat of the lordship to the Baroque castle built around 1750. For cycling, there is a loop of approximately 20 kilometers, as well as a longer tour with an optional extension. First decide whether you want to focus more on historical context or on the route itself.

Liel Castle and its history

Liel Castle is a Baroque castle built around 1750. The former estate included a park, the Cavalier’s House, an agricultural building, a small Baroque theater and the former town hall building. The estate’s history therefore encompasses various elements in addition to the castle itself. The original seat of the Lords of Baden zu Liel was a moated castle below the church; it has since disappeared. This former seat of the lordship should be distinguished from the Baroque castle. To understand Liel’s history chronologically, two sites are central: first, the moated castle as the original seat, and later, the castle built around 1750 with the former estate. The moated castle is not part of the castle; it is a vanished site from the town’s earlier history.

Cycling routes through Liel and the surrounding area

A cycling loop passes through Liel and is approximately 20 kilometers long. It runs from Schliengen via Eggener Straße and Alte Straße to Niedereggenen, Obereggenen, Feldberg and Mauchen. The approximate distance refers to the entire loop. The sequence of towns also helps with orientation: it shows Liel as part of a tour connecting several named places. Check the route before setting off, as details may change.

A longer cycling tour connects Schliengen with Liel, Riedlingen, Holzen, Egringen and Efringen-Kirchen. Optionally, it can be extended along the Old Rhine to Steinenstadt. The two tours therefore differ in how they guide you: the loop has an approximate total distance, while the longer route focuses on the sequence of towns and the possible extension. This lets you choose between a circuit with a stated approximate distance and a longer route with an optional section along the Old Rhine.

Liel for planning your trip

If you are interested in local history, the moated castle and the castle are two points of reference from different periods. On a cycling trip, you can compare the approximately 20-kilometer loop with the longer route. Before searching, consider whether the castle’s history or the cycling route will be the main focus of your stay. This way, you can connect your search for hotels in Liel with the purpose of your trip.
