Rümmingen offers several different starting points for planning your trip: high-altitude trails with far-reaching views, a section of the Way of St. James at the village square, and the historic Kandertal Railway. There is also a church with a pilgrimage history and cultural events in a chapel. You can therefore choose where to stay based on whether you mainly want to hike, learn about regional literary history, or combine culture and rail travel. Check operating days, event schedules and trail conditions in advance.

Hiking with Views of the Region

Hiking trails across the heights around Rümmingen offer panoramic views over the Kandertal, the Basel region and the Vosges in nearby Alsace. The Wii-Wegli routes also pass through vineyards here, with views of the Rhine Valley and the Vosges. Together, they offer two distinct landscape experiences: high-altitude views across several regions and trails through the vineyards. Conditions can change, so it is worth checking the current trail situation before planning a hike.

The Markgräfler Wii-Wegli is a network of wine-hiking trails spanning more than 92 kilometres between Grenzach-Wyhlen, Weil am Rhein and Freiburg im Breisgau. Along these trails, inns, garden restaurants and Straussi establishments serve regional wines and dishes. Which establishments are open and what opening arrangements apply can vary.

For a different route perspective, there is the Hebel Hiking Trail: it runs for around 60 kilometres from the source of the Wiese on the Feldberg to Basel. Information panels with images and text introduce J. P. Hebel; the trail also passes historic buildings and places associated with his poems and life. The western route of the last two stages of the Westweg leads from the Markgräflerland through the Kandertal to Basel. Each of these routes follows its own regional course; check the precise route before setting out.

The Way of St. James and Local History

The Markgräfler stage of the Himmelreich Way of St. James passes through vineyards and orchards directly to Rümmingen’s village square. The small St. James’ Church stands there. In the early 16th century, it served as a pilgrimage church dedicated to St. James. In 1505, local residents built a chapel for the village; in 2005, the Protestant parish celebrated the 500th anniversary of St. James’ Church. Rümmingen is first mentioned in 767, under the name Romaninchova. Access to the church interior may vary.

Literary history is also a feature of the Hebel Hiking Trail: its information panels and historic sites associated with Hebel’s poems and life give the route a cultural focus. Together with details about its length and course, this makes it a regional hiking trail with a literary connection, while the Way of St. James in Rümmingen passes right by the village square and church.

The Kandertal Railway and Culture in the Chapel

The historic Kandertal Railway is a 13-kilometre steam railway line from Haltingen through the Kandertal to Kandern. Rümmingen is a stop on the Kandertal Railway at kilometre 4.5; you can board the historic steam train at Rümmingen station on Schallbacher Straße. Check operating days and the timetable before your visit. This lets you include the railway as a distinct focus alongside the hiking trails and historic sites, without confusing it with routes travelled on foot.

Kulturo Rümmingen organises the recurring “Culture in the Chapel” series, featuring concerts, theatre and cabaret in the chapel. The series adds another cultural highlight to your trip planning; individual programmes may change. If you want to plan your trip around an event, check the relevant dates.

The sports facilities on Schallbacher Straße also include a beach volleyball court. If you want to include it in your plans, check the applicable availability rules in advance.
