Inzlingen combines a distinctive historic building with other traces of the town’s history and information for hiking and cycling tours. The moated castle reflects a long building history and a cultural role; the Reichenstein Meierhaus offers a further glimpse of the older buildings. For getting your bearings outdoors, there is a hiking information board at a specific point, as well as information about trails. These topics give you several ways to decide whether Inzlingen is a good fit for your planned trip.

The Moated Castle: Building History and Culture

Inzlingen Moated Castle acquired its Baroque appearance between 1674 and 1745. This period spans several decades, placing its distinctive form within a development over time rather than attributing it to a single year of construction. In 1969, the municipality of Inzlingen acquired the moated castle; it had it converted and renovated by 1977. Two historical phases therefore stand out: its Baroque design and, much later, its acquisition by the municipality followed by conversion and renovation work. The moated castle is supported as a cultural meeting place for the Regio, hosting concerts, lectures, and exhibitions. Its building history and cultural focus thus offer two distinct reasons to include the castle in your travel plans.

Another Historic Building

Built in 1580, the Reichenstein Meierhaus is the oldest building in Inzlingen. Its construction date provides an earlier point of reference than the Baroque design phase of the moated castle. This brings two distinct questions into view: Which building is the oldest, and which structure combines a Baroque appearance with later municipal conversion? Anyone interested in historic architecture can look beyond the castle to a second, independent building.

Hiking and Finding Your Way

At the Inzlinger Kreuz forest car park, there is a hiking information board at the turn-off from the B 316, coming from Lörrach or Rheinfelden towards Inzlingen/Grenzach-Wyhlen. It provides information about various circular routes. If you would first like to consider several options, it offers a specific point to orient yourself. One hiking route heads towards Bergkopf and Inzlingen Moated Castle, passes through the town, and continues into the Ersteltal valley. The two sources of information differ for planning purposes: the board lists various circular routes, while the hiking route describes a course via Bergkopf, the moated castle, and Inzlingen into the Ersteltal valley. Check current trail conditions before setting out on a hike.

Exploring by Bike

There are no dedicated cycling paths in Inzlingen. At the same time, well-maintained trails that run largely away from roads lead, among other places, to the large district town of Lörrach and the Swiss neighbouring municipality of Riehen. When planning a cycling trip, it is important to distinguish between trail quality and trail type: the trails are well maintained and mostly away from roads, but there are no dedicated cycling paths. Hiking and cycling therefore offer different ways to find your way around: for hiking, information about circular routes and a specific route are provided; for cycling, the nature of the trails and the directions to Lörrach and Riehen are the main focus.

Lörrach as a Distinct Cultural and Landscape Area

Lörrach offers its own cultural and landscape attractions. The Dreiländermuseum Lörrach has a permanent exhibition covering around 1,000 square metres. The Lörrach Sculpture Trail runs through the town and features 23 sculptures, fountains, and monuments by renowned sculptors. The Burghof Lörrach hosts the international STIMMEN Festival every year; its cultural programme includes singing and music, dance, cabaret, literature, and children’s theatre. The weekly market in the centre of Lörrach has also been running since 1403. These attractions add distinct cultural and landscape connections in Lörrach to the picture of Inzlingen.
