Todtnau combines a striking Black Forest landscape with outdoor activities and a cultural-historical theme. The town is located in the upper Wiesental between Feldberg and Belchen, in the Southern Black Forest Nature Park and the Black Forest Biosphere Reserve. When choosing where to stay, you can therefore distinguish between three specific highlights: the waterfall and landscape, hiking and cycling options, and the Brush Museum.

Waterfall and BLACKFORESTLINE

Todtnau Waterfall is located in the Todtnau mountain region between the holiday resorts of Todtnauberg and Aftersteg. With a drop of 97 meters, it is Baden-Württemberg’s highest natural waterfall. At the entrance to Todtnauberg, the 450-meter-long BLACKFORESTLINE spans the waterfall. It is around 120 meters above it and is supported by 76 mm steel cables and 16-meter pylons. These measurements describe different things: 97 meters refers to the waterfall’s drop, 450 meters to the bridge’s length, and around 120 meters to the bridge’s position above the waterfall. This lets you consider the natural feature and the structure as two distinct aspects of the same place.

Routes, tobogganing and a snack

For outdoor activity, Todtnau offers hiking, cycling and mountain biking routes of varying difficulty, with views of the Black Forest. When planning, route type and difficulty are two different criteria; the Black Forest views are common to them all. Todtnauberg also has designated tobogganing areas. For a snack, rustic and cozy mountain huts at StĂĽbenwasen, Gisiboden and Hasenhorn welcome visitors.

Brush Museum and opening hours

The Brush Museum brings the town’s history to the fore. It presents the history of Todtnau’s brush industry from 1770 to the present day; the permanent exhibition is devoted to the life and work of Karl Ludwig Nessler. These two details set a broad historical timeframe alongside a biographical exhibition theme. The Brush Museum and the permanent-wave exhibition are listed as open on Wednesdays and Sundays, from 2 to 5 p.m. Check the hours before your visit so you can factor them into your day’s plans.
