Billafingen lies in a glacial meltwater valley, where floodplain landscapes, drumlins, ridges and deeply incised side valleys create a variety of scenery. You can also enjoy nature watching at the Heinz Sielmann Pond and visit historic sites in the village. When planning your stay, you can therefore choose nature, village history or cycling connections as your main focus.

Landscape and Nature Watching

The Heinz Sielmann Pond is a 1.3-hectare wetland. The wider landscape also includes ponds, ditches, reed beds, flower-rich margins, hedgerows and a water buffalo pasture of around nine hectares. These figures refer to different areas: 1.3 hectares for the wetland and around nine hectares for the pasture.

The area supports the observation of a diverse range of wildlife and plant life. This includes around 340 flowering plant species, as well as white storks and stonechats, which regularly breed there. Species numbers and breeding activity can change with ecological conditions. An observation point can be reached on foot or by bicycle.

Near the Heinz Sielmann Pond area is the pear variety garden at Unterer Frickhof. It is home to 500 old pear varieties, some of which are endangered. Thus, alongside wetland habitats, old fruit varieties are among the nature-related highlights you can discover during a stay in Billafingen.

Village History and Trails

The Billafingen village history trail leads to more than 30 historic sites. These include the town hall, the Bannmühle mill, Billafingen Castle, the Akziserhaus and the Obere Schmiede forge. The stops offer different ways to explore the village’s history, from buildings associated with community life to historic craft sites.

St. Mauritius Church offers a specific example of the area’s architectural history. It was rebuilt in 1488, while an older tower was preserved; this may have served as a defensive tower. The main altar, depicting the Coronation of Mary, has Renaissance origins and was given a Baroque design around 1700. The Billafingen nature trail offers a different focus: it is a hiking route around the village, with views across the glacial valley and the contrasting landscapes surrounding it.

Cycling

A continuous cycle route runs from Billafingen via Owingen to Überlingen and continues into the Lake Constance cycle network. This means that, alongside routes around the village, connections to the wider cycle network can also be a focus of your trip. Check the signposting and route conditions locally. When looking for a hotel in Billafingen, you can make the main focus of your stay nature watching, village history or cycling.

In the Wider Destination of Owingen

In the wider destination of Owingen, the Aachtobel gorge lies below Hohenbodman, a district of Owingen. A stream winds through soft molasse sandstone there. The Jubiläumsweg runs through the Aachtobel as part of a long-distance hiking trail of around 110 kilometres from Kressbronn to Überlingen. Another highlight in Owingen is the Hohenbodman observation tower: it is 37 metres high, its walls are about three metres thick, and the interior staircase has 141 steps. The tower was built in the 11th century as the keep of the castle belonging to the Lords of Bodman.
