Roggenbeuren: St. Verena and the Swing Trail
Accommodation in Roggenbeuren
Roggenbeuren combines historic architecture with opportunities to explore the landscape on foot. St. Verena parish church stands on a mountain spur; the Deggenhausertal Swing Trail starts and ends in the village. Another hike passes through Harresheim and several wooded areas to Urnau and back. You can plan your trip around whether you want to explore architectural history, a trail with play stations, or a longer hike.
St. Verena: Church on a Mountain Spur
St. Verena parish church stands in Roggenbeuren at the tip of a mountain spur on the northern slope of the Gehrenberg. Its location is closely connected to the surrounding landscape and provides a distinctive setting for exploring the village’s architectural history.
The single-nave church is late Gothic and was built in 1514. Its lower level contains a Romanesque choir-side tower. St. Verena thus brings together architectural features from different periods: the late Gothic church building and the Romanesque tower. If you are interested in historic architecture, the building offers specific details to look out for during your visit.
The Deggenhausertal Swing Trail
The Deggenhausertal Swing Trail is an approximately 5 km circular route with 14 swings and seesaws for children and adults. The start and finish are at the information board in Roggenbeuren. Parking and places to stop for refreshments are available there. The route length and play stations give you a clear idea of this outing, but do not indicate a specific walking time.
Between Roggenbeuren and Urnau, the trail passes through gently rolling farmland with orchards and fields and around the Egg woodland. The route therefore alternates between open, agricultural land and the woodland. The swings and seesaws are for children and adults, while the landscape provides the setting for the loop.
Most of the Swing Trail is accessible with a stroller or tricycle. However, one short section on a farm track is rougher. The trail is open seasonally, from the start of the Easter holidays until early November. Before your visit, check whether this period applies to your travel date.
Hiking from Roggenbeuren
One hike from Roggenbeuren first leads through Harresheim and then through the forests of Evareute, Brudergarten and Mannesch to Urnau and back to Roggenbeuren. The sequence of the village and woodland areas gives this route a different character from the Swing Trail loop. If you are planning this hike, check the current route before setting out.
