Gailingen am Hochrhein: History, Park and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Gailingen am Hochrhein
When choosing a hotel in Gailingen am Hochrhein, you can focus on the themes you want to shape your stay: local Jewish history, leisure activities along the Rhine or hiking. The Jewish Museum, the Jewish cemetery, the Rhine Riverside Park, which is open year-round, and the hiking trails offer different highlights.
Jewish History in the Town
The Jewish Museum is located in the historic Bürgerhaus in the centre of Gailingen. The building formerly served as a Jewish schoolhouse. The museum explores the nearly 290-year history and way of life of the Jewish community in Gailingen. The history of the building and the town’s Jewish history therefore come together at a specific location.
In the basement of the museum is a well-preserved ritual bath, a mikveh. As part of the building, it adds a tangible example of Jewish religious life to the story. The Jewish cemetery on the western edge of town also commemorates the history of the community. The museum and cemetery thus offer different historical perspectives: the museum tells the story of the nearly 290-year history and way of life of the Jewish community in Gailingen, while the cemetery commemorates the community.
Rhine Riverside Park: Outdoor Leisure Activities
The Rhine Riverside Park is available year-round to residents and visitors as a place for leisure and recreation. Facilities include a beach volleyball court, table tennis tables and play equipment. There is also a children’s pool with a slide, a water playground and a large sunbathing lawn. The mix of facilities offers sports, water play and space to relax. The Rhine’s water quality is considered very good.
Hiking Trails with Different Highlights
The Panorama Trail in Gailingen, marked with a red diamond, is 20 kilometres long and has an elevation difference of 350 metres. There are nine viewpoints and places of interest along the route. Its length and elevation difference give a clear idea of the route’s scale; the viewpoints and places of interest are further notable spots along the way.
The premium hiking trail “Grenzgänger” passes the old St Nicholas Chapel in Obergailingen. The two trails therefore differ in the route markers mentioned here: for the Panorama Trail, the length, elevation difference and nine viewpoints and places of interest are specified; for the Grenzgänger, the old chapel is a named point along the route.
