Obersulm: Hiking, Cycling and Nature Experiences
Accommodation in Obersulm
When looking for a hotel in Obersulm, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: hiking, cycling, experiencing nature or swimming. You’ll find signposted hiking trails, specific routes, cycling paths, a mineral outdoor pool and a digital orchard meadow in the area. The options vary in terms of starting points, marked distances and landscape features. The details below give you a basis for planning your stay around your interests.
Hiking: Discovery Trails and Longer Routes
The Obersulm Wine Discovery Trail is signposted from the centre of Affaltrach and from the Affaltrach Stadtbahn stop. There is a car park at the foot of the trail. On arrival, check the local signs and parking conditions. The Forest Discovery Trail and the Wine Discovery Trail can be combined into a route of about 4.5 kilometres. This distance covers both trails together and gives you a compact basis for planning a hike.
A short, challenging hiking route starts at Sülzbach station. It crosses fields towards Wimmental, then climbs past orchard meadows and a farm café, through vineyards and up to Rauhberg. The route offers clear reference points for choosing a tour: from the fields to the orchard meadows and on to the vineyards. If you enjoy experiencing different landscapes while hiking, you’ll find a clearly described sequence here.
The 12-kilometre WT 2 hike, “Of Water and Wine,” starts in Affaltrach, passes through a residential area towards Eschenau and then climbs to Ammertsberg. Compared with the route combining the two discovery trails, which is about 4.5 kilometres long, WT 2 is the longer option based on the stated distance. Check current route conditions before setting off. The Weinsberger Tal hiking trails WT 2 (“Of Water and Wine”) and WT 20 (“Off to Paradise!”) to WT 26 (“Rauhberg Tour”) also run through the Obersulm district. The options therefore include both individual described routes and a series of named hiking trails.
Cycling, Swimming and Experiencing Nature
There are numerous well-signposted cycling paths around Obersulm and in the Weinsberger Tal, which are also suitable for individual bike rides. This means you can plan cycling as a separate activity alongside your hikes; the signs provide guidance if you put together a route yourself. The cycling paths complement the specific hiking descriptions with another way to explore the area at your own pace.
Another activity is the Obersulm mineral outdoor pool. It has a solar-heated water area of 1,200 m². Its size and heating method make the outdoor pool a specific swimming destination alongside the trails. If you’d like to add swimming to your stay, you can make the pool a focus of your plans.
Between Affaltrach and Eschenau, in the “Unteres Greut” area, there is an orchard meadow set up as a digital experience and learning space for all ages. A digital tour on a website lets you experience the orchard from home, too. This offering connects the physical location with a digital option: you can explore the orchard meadow as a place for nature and learning, or take the tour from home. If you want to plan the digital tour in advance, check that the linked platform is currently available.
