Offenau brings together historic buildings, salt history and places along the Neckar. If you are looking for a hotel in Offenau, you can first consider which focus suits your trip: the Historical Trail with its stops, a short visit to the Johann-Michl Promenade or planning around the train connections. The local options differ considerably—from individual buildings to a stroll to rail travel planning.

History among the chapel, salt warehouse and church

Built in 1892, the Count von Westerholt Chapel stands next to the Kulturforum Saline. The salt warehouse, built in 1780, is located at the edge of Offenau in the direction of Jagstfeld and reflects the town’s salt history. Inside, Offenau’s St. Alban’s parish church on the banks of the Neckar contains an impressive example of Baroque art. Among the buildings with explicitly stated dates, the salt warehouse predates the chapel; the church adds its Baroque interior to these historical connections.

The Offenau Historical Trail passes 17 stops and traces more than 1,200 years of local history in this former spa town. You can explore it with a local archivist as your guide, if you wish.

Trail, promenade and Neckar

The Johann-Michl Promenade, about one kilometre long, is designed to blend with nature and has benches for sitting and reclining. It is suitable as a rest stop for cyclists or for a short walk. It offers a different kind of visit from the Historical Trail: a break or a short walk rather than a tour through local history.

Water skiing is another Neckar activity. Offenau is home to one of the few water-skiing courses on an inland waterway in Germany. It runs along the Neckar for about two kilometres downstream to the Gundelsheim lock.
