Loffenau lies amid the landscapes of the Black Forest Central/North Nature Park. Here, late medieval church art, an award-winning village square and distinctive landscape features come together. If you are looking for a hotel in Loffenau, you can plan your stay around the things that interest you: local history, waterfalls, scenic viewpoints or walks through the landscape.

Local History in the Church and Village Square

Late medieval frescoes from Loffenau’s old church have been preserved in the Holy Cross Church. Only the chancel of the former church remains; it now forms the lower part of the tower. The frescoes and the surviving structure thus point to two distinct traces of the old church: its wall paintings and its architectural legacy.

A more recent feature of the townscape is the new village square in the Kirchwiesen area. It has won an award and blends into Loffenau’s townscape. The observatory on the Grenzertplatte was officially inaugurated on October 4, 2008. These places represent different chapters in the town’s history—from preserved church art to a later public construction project.

Waterfalls, Viewpoints and Landscape Features

A bridge with a viewing platform and a new flight of steps makes it possible to visit the Laufbach Waterfalls as part of the Kleine Dorfrunde trail. In certain weather conditions, the paths by the waterfalls can be slippery, so sure footing is required. The Sonnenlaube on Pfarrberg is a viewpoint that offers both views and shade.

The Teufelskammern, east of Loffenau and not far from the GroĂźen Loch, are another distinctive landscape feature. These cave-like erosion formations lie in the Eck Formation of the Lower Buntsandstein. Softer sandstone eroded beneath a harder, silicified layer of Buntsandstein, which now forms the roof of the formations. The name therefore describes a geological feature whose formation is related to the different ways the rock layers behave.

Routes and Places for Activities

The Panoramarunde starts at the Kurpark. It first follows DorfstraĂźe for a short distance to Kreuzstich, then heads towards the Bergle viewpoint. Another landmark is the MichelsrankhĂĽtte: from the area behind the TeufelsmĂĽhlturm, you can reach it via the Zick-Zack-Pfad; the descent is about 100 meters in elevation.

Two paragliding launch sites operate on the Teufelsmühle: the western one is at an elevation of 900 meters, and the northwestern one at 846 meters. The water-treading area in the Löchle/Holzwiesen district was established around 50 years ago and is still used as a recreational facility by children and local residents. The local spots vary considerably—from precisely specified elevations, to trails with a stated descent, to a recreational facility that remains in use.

Rastatt as a Broader Travel Destination

The broader travel destination of Rastatt offers a range of cultural attractions in their own right. The Rastatt City Museum is housed in a Baroque town palace opposite the residential palace. Its permanent exhibitions cover Rastatt’s history over the past 300 years, as well as its prehistoric and early history. Rastatt Palace was the first Baroque residence built on German soil and was designed after the model of Versailles.

The Memorial Site for the Freedom Movements in German History also offers a distinct focus. It presents key stages in the development of freedom and democratic traditions from the early modern period to the present day. Exhibits, models, images, caricatures and contemporary texts illustrate the revolutionary struggle of men and women throughout Germany in 1848/49, which ended with the fall of Rastatt Fortress.
