Rheinmünster – Rhine floodplains, nature trails and history
Accommodation in Rheinmünster
Rheinmünster is located in the Upper Rhine Plain between Baden-Baden and Bühl, at the foot of the Black Forest. Meadows, Rhine floodplains and woodland shape the landscape. When planning a stay, a variety of interests may influence your choice: a route through a nature reserve, a technical attraction, aviation history, encounters with animals or historical themes. The different destinations each have their own focus and offer ideas for planning your day.
Getting here and finding your way around
Rheinmünster is part of the Karlsruhe Transport Association (KVV); a single ticket is valid on all local trains and buses in the surrounding area. Bus route 234 from Rastatt serves several stops in Rheinmünster. Route 268 connects Rheinmünster with the nearest train station in Bühl. Routes and timetables may change, so check connections before travelling.
You can also plan your journey by car: Baden-Airpark in Rheinmünster is located right by the A5, B36 and B500 roads. Check current traffic conditions before setting off.
Nature, trails and excursions
The 7.5-kilometre trail through the Alter Kopfgrund nature reserve offers opportunities to enjoy nature in the Rhine floodplains. Along the trail, information boards point to people and events from Greffern and offer a brief introduction to Greffern's history. The route thus brings together the landscape and local history.
The Polder Information Trail is an excursion destination for technology enthusiasts and nature lovers. By contrast, the trail through Alter Kopfgrund focuses on experiencing nature in the Rhine floodplains; the two destinations appeal to different interests.
The German-Canadian Air Force Museum in Söllingen displays four historic fighter aircraft from the Cold War. Since museum exhibits may change over time, if you are particularly interested, check in advance which aircraft are on display. The camel and ostrich farm in Rheinmünster-Schwarzach offers close-up encounters with llamas, alpacas, ostriches, camels and dromedaries. Check the facilities and access arrangements before your visit.
Monastery history and culture
Schwarzach Minster is considered one of Baden-Württemberg's great artistic treasures. Schwarzach Abbey is first mentioned in a copy of a document from the year 817; in 994, it was granted market rights. A devastating fire severely damaged the church in 1299. The rebuilt church was solemnly consecrated in 1302. This sequence spans the abbey's early documentary mention, the granting of market rights, the fire damage and the rebuilding.
Culture in the wider destination of Rastatt
In the wider destination of Rastatt, the town museum is housed in a Baroque town palace opposite the residential palace. Its permanent exhibitions cover Rastatt's history over the past 300 years, as well as prehistory and early history. Rastatt Palace was the first Baroque residence built on German soil and was modelled on Versailles.
