Three different aspects stand out when planning your trip to Deufringen: the Sheep Tracks route, the Heckengäu cultural landscape and the history of Deufringen Castle. The hike provides a concrete time frame, while the landscape and castle offer additional perspectives. You can plan your stay according to whether you mainly want to organise a hike or also take nature and local history into account.

Hiking the Sheep Tracks route

The December 2014 tourism guide describes the Sheep Tracks route as a 9.2-kilometre hike that starts in the centre of Deufringen. It gives an estimated walking time of around two to three hours, excluding breaks. The hike is considered easy and is described as signposted along the entire route. Check the signs on site before setting out.

The stated walking time helps you plan the route as a separate activity; breaks are additional. Along the way, the route offers views of the Heckengäu landscape and follows maintained agricultural and forestry tracks and nature trails, passing landscape information points. This means you can assess the hike not only by its length and duration, but also by its route sections and scenic impressions.

The Heckengäu landscape

Deufringen is associated with the Heckengäu cultural landscape. Its characteristic features include hedgerows, juniper heaths, orchards, expansive views and areas grazed by sheep. These features provide another consideration for your plans in addition to the route’s length: you can take into account whether the cultural landscape itself is an important part of your trip.

Deufringen Castle and local history

Deufringen Castle dates from the 16th century, is associated with the von Gültlingen family and is now owned by the municipality. This adds a historical focus alongside the hike and the landscape. You can therefore get to know Deufringen through both a specific activity and its local history.

Getting to the hike

For access to the Sheep Tracks route, the route description lists bus line 763 to the Rathaus stop in Deufringen, as well as connections from the Böblingen/Sindelfingen S-Bahn area. Check the current VVS timetables before travelling. This lets you coordinate your journey with your hike plans: the estimated walking time of around two to three hours excludes breaks and does not include travel time. Plan them as separate parts of your day.

Regional context: Aidlingen

The wider destination of Aidlingen also offers natural and cultural context, which is distinct from Deufringen’s local themes. More than half of Aidlingen’s municipal area is protected as a nature or landscape conservation area. The Venusberg nature reserve covers around 115 hectares and is the largest nature reserve in the Böblingen district. The heights of Venusberg offer good views.

Another distinct focus in Aidlingen is the East German Heritage Room of the Federation of Expellees. It is located on the second floor of the Hopfenhaus; its collection focuses on Carpathian German traditional costumes from the Upper Zips. Aidlingen’s nature and cultural themes add to the regional context, but remain separate from the hiking and historical themes described for Deufringen.
