Visan combines a varied wine-growing landscape with historic buildings and seasonal wine experiences. If you are looking for a hotel in Visan, the village’s different facets can help you decide which impressions you would like to shape your stay: panoramic views of the surrounding area, the old village centre or a guided walk through the vineyards.

Vineyards, hills and panoramic views

Visan lies in front of a natural amphitheatre of colourful hills. The landscape is a mosaic of vineyards, olive groves, flowering broom and forests. Viticulture is therefore part of a varied setting in which the different landscape features alternate.

From a viewpoint on the hill near Visan, you can see across slopes lined with vineyards and an extensive cultivated plain. More than ten surrounding villages and Mont Ventoux are also visible. The view from above offers a different perspective from the route through the old village centre: here, the open landscape is the focus; there, the village’s architectural history.

Gates and architectural history in the old village centre

The old village centre is home to grand private residences dating from the Renaissance to the late 18th century. The monumental gates also give the village its historic character. The Porte du Puy-Barret dates from 1320. The Porte Saint-Martin is one of the surviving monumental gates of the Dauphins’ fortifications in Visan.

Extensive work was carried out on the parish church of Saint-Pierre between 1498 and 1520, apparently without interruption. These dates provide a different point of reference from the Renaissance houses and the gate dating from 1320. If you are interested in the development of the village’s appearance, you will encounter different periods and architectural styles within Visan.

Vineyard walks and exhibitions

On Thursdays in summer, guided walks take visitors through Visan’s vineyards. Georges Truc, an oenologist specialising in the terroirs of the Rhône Valley, accompanies the walks and provides commentary. They end in the salons of the Hôtel de Pélissier with a wine tasting accompanied by winegrowers. Domaine de la Bastide produces Côtes-du-Rhône-Villages wines from the Visan appellation. For these seasonal walks, check the latest dates and booking conditions.

The Hôtel de Pélissier hosts exhibitions throughout the year. Check the current events calendar before your visit. This means the two possible cultural highlights also differ in their timing: the vineyard walks take place on Thursdays in summer, while the exhibitions are shown year-round.

Explore Visan on foot

The Circuit 17 walking route is a way to explore the village of Visan. It offers a different experience from the guided walk through the vineyards: Circuit 17 focuses on the village, while the summer walks focus on viticulture, with commentary and a tasting. This distinction can help you choose the activities that suit your stay.
