Saignon: Cliff Views, Village History and Nature Market
Accommodation in Saignon
Viewpoint and Geology
When choosing Saignon as a destination, the landscape, local history and the amount of time available are especially relevant. The Rocher de Bellevue offers a viewpoint a short walk from the village, while a mountain-bike loop takes several hours. There is also a walking tour that includes a visit to a church, as well as a seasonal nature market. This lets you decide in advance whether you want to focus on a short stop, getting active or cultural and historical sights.
The 35-metre-high Rocher de Bellevue de Saignon rises above the village. From this viewpoint, the panoramic view stretches across the Calavon Valley and takes in Mont Ventoux and the Montagne de Lure. The rock is also known as Rocher de Saignon and is an erosional remnant isolated from the Claparèdes plateau. The term describes a single hill separated from its plateau by erosion. Saignon is part of the Parc Naturel Régional du Luberon.
You can reach the Rocher on foot from the village in ten minutes; a car park lies below the village on the D48 from the direction of Apt. Check local conditions before planning the walk to the viewpoint.
Choose Routes by Time Required
The “Saignon – Le plateau de Caseneuve” mountain-bike loop is 25.9 kilometres long, classed as difficult and takes three hours and 15 minutes. It starts at the parking area du Fangas, four kilometres northeast of the village; the “Saignon – Crêtes du Grand Luberon” route, by contrast, starts at the parking area du Pasquier above the village. The duration of the mountain-bike loop highlights the difference from the ten-minute walk from the village: this is a matter of planning a route lasting several hours rather than making a short stop. Check parking conditions before setting out and, for the mountain-bike loop, check the route conditions as well.
Local History on a Walking Tour
On a walking tour of Saignon, you can visit the church of Notre-Dame-de-Pitié. The town walls and a fortified gate bear witness to the village's former role as a refuge for its inhabitants. Another historical landmark is the former abbey of Saint-Eusèbe: it is documented as far back as 1004, and its Romanesque church dates from the last third of the 12th century. This places an early record of the abbey alongside a later date for the church.
Seasonal Market and Donkey Walks
The Marché nature de Saignon nature market takes place from 1 April to 31 October, every Thursday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Place du petit Pasquier. If you plan to visit the market, check the day of the week shortly before your trip.
A tourism listing dated 28 October 2024 says that Les Ânes des Collines has donkeys available to rent for half-day or full-day walks in Saignon. The same listing also mentions a discovery tour for children about local flora and fauna. The half-day and full-day options offer different time slots; the children's tour also has an additional focus on flora and fauna. Check the availability of these activities before your trip.
