Crestet brings together a medieval village, historic buildings, a woodland area with contemporary sculptures, and wine tourism. These features call for different kinds of planning: the village can be explored on foot along steep calades, while tasting platters at Domaine La Verrière are available by prior arrangement. If you are considering Crestet as a destination, this distinction can help you get a sense of what to expect: village history and terrain sit alongside art in the forest and an offering for which tasting platters require prior coordination.

Rocky Ridge, Village, and Historic Buildings

The first Château de Crestet was built around 840–850. It stands on a narrow, elongated rocky ridge between two valleys. From the highest point in the village, there are panoramic views of the Dentelles de Montmirail and Mont Ventoux. These two local reference points should be distinguished: the Château stands on the rocky ridge, while the distant view mentioned here opens up from the highest point in the village. The building’s location and the viewpoint are therefore two separate points of reference for finding your way around.

A later building is the Chapelle de l’Annonciade, built in 1535: it was constructed outside the fortified village at the foot of the steps leading to the former Porte Notre-Dame. The Église Saint-Sauveur, in turn, is partly built into the rock. The Château, chapel, and church connect Crestet with different historical and architectural features; the chapel is specifically located outside the fortifications by the former entrance. The dates of the Château and chapel place these buildings in markedly different historical periods.

On Foot Along the Calades

The medieval village can be explored on foot along steep calades. Plan your visit as a walk over steep terrain. Visitors are advised to leave their vehicle in the small square of the former town hall and then walk along the steep calades. Parking rules may change; check them locally before your visit. This gives you both the type of route and the recommended starting point for visiting the village.

Sculptures in the Forest

The Fondation Stahly lies outside the village of Crestet in a woodland area of oaks and pines. Its grounds and part of the forest gradually became places for creating and exhibiting contemporary sculptures. This setting is known as the Parc forestier du Haut Crestet. On 8 June 1988, the Fondation Stahly was listed as a historic monument by decree. The forest, oaks, and pines form a landscape distinct from the Château’s rocky ridge; the sculptures add a contemporary artistic dimension. Its location outside the village also sets this attraction apart geographically from the calades and buildings of the historic village.

Wine Tourism by Prior Arrangement

Domaine La Verrière offers luxury wine tourism experiences, cellar tours, and tasting platters by prior arrangement. If you would like to include tasting platters in your plans, arrange them in advance and confirm availability before you arrive. This means the stated prior arrangement remains part of your visit planning.
