If you are considering La Tour-D'aigues as a destination for a stay, its cultural history is a clear focus: the Renaissance château, faience and churches point to different aspects and periods of the village. Rue d’Eole and the banks of the Eze add village history and landscape to this perspective; Forest Sensation represents a different, more active side of a stay.

Renaissance Traces at Château de La Tour d’Aigues

Château de La Tour d’Aigues is a Renaissance building, of which ruins, façades and restored cellars remain following the fires of 1780 and 1792. The restored rooms display a partially preserved French Renaissance floor, as well as white and decorated faience from the workshop of Baron Jean-Baptiste Jérôme de Bruny. In the castle courtyard, you can explore the buildings through the historical periods using the explanatory panels.

Faience and Archaeological Finds

The Musée des Faïences preserves ceramics dating from the Renaissance to the Revolution, recovered during archaeological excavations at Château de La Tour d’Aigues. This collection offers a different perspective from the faience displayed in the château rooms, which came from the Baron’s workshop. The museum now has more than 2,000 catalogued pieces; the number may change as the inventory is updated. Check current access arrangements before your visit.

Churches and Different Historical Layers

When visiting Eglise Notre Dame de Romégas, it is important to distinguish between different dates: the first known mention of the church appears in a papal bull from 1096. The oldest surviving parts probably date from the 13th century: the nave, the apse and the first chapel to the right of the choir. The year 1096 therefore refers to the mention, not the dating of the surviving structural elements. The sculpture group “Mise au tombeau du Christ” is located in this first chapel to the right of the choir.

Chapelle Saint Christophe was built in 1558 by Jacques Jehan, commissioned by Jean Louis Nicolas de Bouliers. To arrange a visit, contact the local parish priest; check the available contact options again before your trip. The chapel’s construction led to the founding of a local brotherhood and an annual pilgrimage tradition.
