Belgentier on the Gapeau: Heritage and Nature
Accommodation in Belgentier
Belgentier offers a variety of things to explore during your stay: the Gapeau, cultural landmarks and opportunities for outdoor activities. On the RD 554, the town forms the gateway to the green Gapeau Valley.
The Gapeau and Parc Peiresc
The coastal river Gapeau runs through Belgentier. Along the river lies the 2.5-hectare Parc Peiresc, an area designated as an Espace Naturel Sensible (sensitive natural area). Here, a protected natural landscape meets a park with a range of facilities.
Parc Peiresc offers fitness equipment, children’s playgrounds, a boules court and access for anglers. If you plan to use one of these facilities, check what is currently available before your visit; the listed amenities may change.
In the centre of Belgentier, near Parc Peiresc, there is a trout fishing stretch regularly used by keen anglers. A no-kill rule applies, and the stretch belongs to the first fishing category. As seasonal access and rules may change, check them before you set off.
Heritage and local history
Notre-Dame de l’Assomption is a 17th-century church. It features a Renaissance dome and historic furnishings, and is listed in the Monuments Historiques register. On its west façade, a fresco created by Michel Deguil in 1992 depicts Louis XIV and his entourage staying in Belgentier.
On his pilgrimage to Cotignac, Louis XIV stayed in Belgentier on 20 February 1660. He spent the night at Château Peiresc and attended Mass the following morning, 21 February. The fresco on the church depicts this stay.
Château Peiresc is a 17th-century residence classified as a Monument Historique. It housed a cabinet of curiosities reflecting the artistic and literary tastes of the scholar and humanist Nicolas Claude Fabri de Peiresc. The façade is visible from Rue Peiresc; the garden and interior can only be visited during Heritage Days. If you plan to visit, check the visiting conditions in advance.
The Maison du Patrimoine features a permanent exhibition of objects, tools and photographs illustrating Belgentier’s past. The exhibition content may be updated. The washhouse at Rayol also tells the story of past water use: a canal carried water from the river.
Routes and landscapes
The Circuit des Aiguilles de Valbelle is a marked 10-kilometre circular trail with orange waymarking. The stated duration is 240 minutes, or four hours. The circuit can be used for mountain biking and horse riding. The distance, stated duration and permitted activities provide practical information to help you match the route to your planned activity. Seasonal restrictions on access to the forest may apply; check access conditions before setting off.
The Aiguilles de Valbelle are natural monuments shaped over thousands of years by erosion of the plateau’s dolomitic rock. Their geological origins add another perspective on the landscape to the practical information about the route.
The Plateau de Siou Blanc
As a regional landscape, the Plateau de Siou Blanc extends across four municipalities, including Belgentier and Solliès-Toucas. Marked trails wind through pine forests, rocky terrain, garrigue and wooded areas. This landscape, shared by several municipalities, offers another setting for nature-related activities during your stay.
Olives and regional tradition
Since 1930, the La Belgentiéroise olive cooperative has been known in the region for its table olives. These include the Belgentiéroise olive, named after the cooperative. This tradition adds a regional food dimension to the town’s profile alongside its historic buildings and landscape.
