Réallon: Cross-country skiing, mountain nature and heritage
Accommodation in Réallon
Réallon lies partly within Parc national des Écrins and overlooks Lac de Serre-Ponçon. Beyond the hamlet of Les Gourniers, the upper Réallon valley lies in the heart of the national park. The area offers several ways to plan your trip: winter cross-country skiing, wildlife watching, hiking and historic buildings. If you are looking for a hotel in Réallon, you can start by considering which of these aspects of the destination you want to shape your stay.
Cross-country skiing and wildlife watching
The Domaine nordique de Réallon near Les Gourniers offers around 30 kilometres of cross-country ski trails. Trail availability depends on the season, so check what activities are possible during your travel dates. Chamois watching can also be a reason to choose when to visit: in the upper Réallon valley, it is considered relatively easy, especially in autumn during the rutting season and in winter. This makes autumn, as well as winter, a possibility for wildlife watching.
Hiking trails and a timed circular walk
Réallon has numerous hiking trails and short discovery walks. One option is the Prince and the Shepherd Discovery Trail, an easy circular route with just under 100 metres of ascent. The walk takes 1.5 to 2 hours, including play breaks. This gives you a specific time frame for the route, with breaks already included. The cross-country ski area, by contrast, can be assessed by its approximate trail length of 30 kilometres: the two figures describe different aspects of trip planning.
Fort, church and views
A fort at the Chef-Lieu is part of Réallon’s heritage. Its square keep was built in the 12th century; the surrounding wall is 77 metres long and 35 metres wide. The path to the fort leads to a plateau with meadows. From there, the panorama stretches from the summit of Barle to Lac de Serre-Ponçon. The Église Saint Pelade, dating from the 16th century, is also located at the Chef-Lieu. The fort and the church offer specific historical landmarks from different centuries.
Geology and activities in Les Gourniers
Les Oucanes is a limestone pavement within the Aiguilles de Chabrières. More than 20 straight fissures mark the formation, some reaching depths of up to 25 metres. If you want to look beyond panoramic views and focus on distinctive landforms, this is a striking geological feature.
After hiking or mountain biking, the Base de loisirs de l’Iscle in Les Gourniers offers the opportunity to swim in the Laccas body of water. It also houses the visitor centre for Parc national des Écrins. Opening may vary by season. If swimming or visiting the centre is part of your plans, check in advance what is possible during your trip.
Mountain biking and adventure course
The Bikepark de Réallon comprises a discovery area for children, eight downhill trails and four enduro routes. This breakdown gives a clear overview of the bike park’s different features; the children’s discovery area is explicitly part of the offer. Réallon Adventure offers a different kind of activity: its high ropes course is set in a larch forest at an altitude of 1,560 metres. Its opening hours depend on the season, so it is worth checking the current times when planning your trip.
