Puy-Saint-Pierre: Chapel Trails and Mining History

Puy-Saint-Pierre offers different ways to explore its history and landscape: the Sentier des Chapelles winds through the hamlets’ architectural and religious heritage, while Combarine is associated with mining and geology. Chapels, Church, and Local History

The Sentier des Chapelles follows old mule tracks and passes through the hamlets of Puy-Saint-Pierre, showcasing their rich architectural and religious heritage. One notable feature of the landscape is a viewpoint overlooking Briançon and the upper Durance Valley. The route to the Chapelle Notre-Dame des Neiges starts from the church square. The chapel stands at an altitude of 2,292 metres in the highlands of Puy-Saint-Pierre and Prorel.

The Chapelle Saint-Sixte can also be dated: its construction was approved by the Archbishop of Embrun in 1497. The chapel has frescoes, including a 16th-century Pietà. A fresco on the exterior façade dates from 1808 and depicts Saint Sixtus, Saint Peter, and Saint Anthony. These dates point to several phases in the history of the building and its art, rather than a single period that explains the entire site.

The Musée de l'Église is located in the sacristy of the Église Saint-Pierre. It displays sacred relics, military objects, and a model of the village. Access is only possible as part of an organized tour, so take this condition into account when planning. The parish church of Saint-Pierre was listed as a historic monument by decree on 29 August 1989. The Cadran Zarbula du Pinet, dating from 1842, is located at Maison, au Pinet; as part of the house, it was listed as a historic monument by decree on 21 March 1995. The bell tower also bears a Cadran solaire de l'Église dating from 1994.

The village’s history also includes a major upheaval in the 20th century: much of the traditional village was destroyed during the liberation battles of 1944 and rebuilt after the Second World War. Together with the older chapels and monuments, this provides a timeline spanning historic buildings and the village’s more recent history.

Mining and Geological Traces

The Mine de Combarine was worked on a small scale from 1824 to 1929, then industrially until 1962. You can visit the mine independently by following the information panels along the route. Local conditions may change, so check them before your visit. The successive periods of operation give the mining history a specific context: small-scale operations were followed by industrial use.

The Domaine Géologique et Minier de Combarine offers a different focus. From its educational platforms, you can explore Carboniferous landscapes and see fossil tree ferns. This is not just about the mine’s former use, but also its geological traces. The Boucle des Mines is listed as 3 kilometres long, with a stated duration of 2 hours and 30 minutes. Consider both figures together when planning, rather than estimating the time needed from the distance alone.

Trails and Winter Sports

The routes offer different points of interest: the Sentier des Chapelles focuses on old mule tracks, the heritage of the hamlets, and views over Briançon and the upper Durance Valley. By contrast, the route to the Chapelle Notre-Dame des Neiges starts from the church square and leads to a high-altitude destination.

For winter sports, Puy-Saint-Pierre provides access to the Serre Chevalier ski area and is considered a preferred access point to the area. Kilometres of ski runs are available from the Prorel intermediate station on the Plateau de Pralong.
