Rosans can be explored through its architectural history and various themed trails. In the medieval village, the Tour Carrée and a town wall with gates lead to the historic center. Trails also highlight the former postal route, place names, and sundials. If you choose Rosans for culture or walks, these different points of interest can help you plan your visit. Crafts and seasonal lavender activities add to the picture; some visits require an appointment or are available only at certain times.

Medieval Architecture and Village History

The Tour Carrée stands at the heart of the medieval village of Rosans. It dates from the 12th century and is built from diamond-shaped sandstone blocks. Its walls are four meters thick. This massive construction makes the tower a striking part of the village’s history. In summer, it hosts craft exhibitions; the seasonal program may change. Check current dates before your visit.

The town wall is also part of the fortified village: gates lead to the historic center. On Rue du Tunnel, the old calade, or cobbled lane, follows a former battlement walk, later covered over by neighboring houses. These architectural features tell different stories of the village’s former fortifications: the wall is still standing, while the battlement walk has been absorbed into the present-day street layout.

The Château de Lesdiguières was built around 1390, starting with a medieval tower, and extensively remodeled in the early 17th century. Its history of construction therefore spans several eras. The time between its medieval origins and its later remodeling is particularly useful for understanding its history.

Sundials and Themed Trails

The “Giono” sundial in Rosans dates from 1981 and bears a saying by Jean Giono. The De Turckheim sundial is on the façade of the former temple, which now houses the town hall; its motto is “Plus est en toi.” The two sundials therefore emphasize different connections: one to the writer Jean Giono, the other to a short motto and the building’s changing use.

The self-guided, map-based Route des Cadrans Solaires (Sundial Trail) runs through the Sisteron Buëch area and also includes the Giono sundial in Rosans. Check the route details in advance. Those who would rather follow a trail connected to the village’s history can take the Chemin du Facteur, which follows a different theme: it starts at Rosans church square and follows the former postal route between Rosans and Sainte-Marie-de-Rosans, which was used until 1925. Before setting out, check trail conditions and local signage.

The 6.9-kilometer Sentier Toponymie du Rosanais is a themed trail in Rosans. It focuses on place names; check maintenance and access information in advance. The Chemin des Roses offers another point of interest: painted roses on the village streets mark the route. The blue route starts at Château de Rosans and is specifically suitable for wheelchair users, people with walking difficulties, and strollers. As local access rules may change, confirm accessibility information before your trip.

Crafts and Seasonal Experiences

At the Forge de Rosans, a bladesmith makes unique, handmade custom knives. The workshop can be visited by appointment; confirm availability in advance. Marion Richaume is a ceramic artist who creates faience pieces inspired by nature. Her works are available at the Atelier de la Lune in Rosans. If you would like to visit the studio, check access arrangements beforehand.

La Rivière des Arômes offers a seasonal experience centered on lavender distillation. Activities include harvesting and distilling lavender, as well as producing essential oil and floral water. Check locally for details about how it is run. Plan d’eau de Pigerolles offers a different kind of experience: just outside Rosans, it is set in green surroundings and provides a place to relax. Water conditions and facilities may vary seasonally.

Scenery in the Surrounding Area

Around Rosans, visitors can enjoy views across the Oule Valley and its dark marl slopes. Nearby, above Saint-André-de-Rosans at Le Serres d’Autruy, rounded sandstone blocks known as “dinosaur eggs” can be seen. This excursion spot is specifically located near Saint-André-de-Rosans. The landscape and geological formations thus complement the architecture and themed trails, offering another perspective on the region.
