Châteauroux-Les-Alpes offers a range of outdoor activities: hiking, climbing at Roche Rousse, whitewater sports on the Durance and a guided water hike in the Canyon du Couleau. When planning your trip, keep the relevant time, age and seasonal conditions in mind. If you are looking for a hotel in the destination, it may help to first choose the activities you want to shape your days.

Hiking with views and points of interest

The hike to the Cascade de la Pisse is considered the best-known hike in Châteauroux-Les-Alpes. It is rated moderate and takes three hours; trail conditions may vary seasonally. At the destination, the Cascade plunges more than 40 metres.

Another hike leads to the Belvédère de Roche Rousse, with views of Châteauroux and the Durance and Rabioux valleys. It starts and ends at the Roche Rousse climbing area car park; access rules may change. The Chemin de la Durance, by contrast, starts and ends at the former SNCF station. It passes over the Plateau d’Herbonne, also known as Roc glaciaire, and by the Chapelle Saint-Jacques and the Durance. The Belvédère is all about the views; the Chemin offers a different perspective, taking in the plateau, chapel and river. The different start and end points are also worth considering when choosing your route: the climbing area car park for the viewpoint hike, and the former SNCF station for the Chemin.

Whitewater and guided water hike

For whitewater, the Vague du Rabioux is a notable landmark on the Durance: it forms where the Rabioux torrent joins the Durance and is one of the largest starting bases for rafting, hydrospeed and all whitewater sports. River conditions vary by season. Châteauroux-Les-Alpes also has an easily accessible entry point on the Durance, with a ramp leading to the launch area; the Eau Vive Passion leisure centre is located by the river. Check its operating conditions seasonally.

The Canyon du Couleau offers a guided water hike for children aged seven and over and families. July and August are considered the best time to go; the tour takes place under professional supervision. It includes water games, cave exploration, jumps and natural slides. Canyoning conditions and rules may vary seasonally. The canyon tour differs from the whitewater base at the Vague in its guided format and minimum age of seven.

Climbing and seasonal access

Roche Rousse is a climbing area in Châteauroux-Les-Alpes, classified as “terrain d’aventure” (adventure terrain). The routes are 15 to 35 metres high; route features may change. As the area is also used for bird nesting, access may be regulated seasonally. Before your visit, check both the current route features and any access rules that may apply.

Historical landmark

The Church of Saint-Marcellin dates from the 16th century. If you would also like to include historic buildings in your travel plans, this cultural landmark complements the hiking and water activities.
