Puyloubier: Hiking on the southern slope of Sainte-Victoire
Accommodation in Puyloubier
Puyloubier is a starting point for hiking trails on Sainte-Victoire. Long-distance trails, educational paths and cultural heritage sites offer different points of interest. If you are looking for a destination with specific hiking opportunities and historic stops, the named routes and buildings offer a variety of starting points.
Hiking and climbing on Sainte-Victoire
The GR9 long-distance trail passes through Puyloubier. The Italian branch of the Way of St James, the GR 653 A, also runs through the village. Puyloubier is also a starting point for trails on Sainte-Victoire. The two named long-distance trails and the hiking trails on the mountain provide different route options for planning.
The Sentier des Vignerons is a three-hour hiking trail with information panels. It starts at the cooperative winery and passes by oratories, chapels and vineyards. The long circular route covers 13 kilometres. A different time estimate applies to the Sentier botanique de Saint-Ser: this two-hour botanical educational trail was created by the Grand Site Sainte-Victoire. This gives you two specific options for planning your time: two hours for the botanical trail and three hours for the Sentier des Vignerons.
The Sentier des Vignerons bears the “Tourisme & Handicap” label and enables people with intellectual or hearing impairments to enjoy the landscape and cultural experiences inclusively. Before your trip, check the current information about the label and trail conditions. On the Puyloubier–Chapelle Saint-Ser–Pic des Mouches route, there is an orientation table at Pic des Mouches that helps you take in the panorama. Check the condition of the table during your visit.
You can reach the Chapelle Ermitage Saint-Ser on foot from the Saint-Ser car park on the D17 between Saint-Antonin and Puyloubier. Saint-Ser also has climbing areas on the rocks of the Ermitage and Vallée de la Tine, suitable for all levels of difficulty.
Chapels, walls and a museum
The Chapelle Ermitage Saint-Ser was consecrated on 5 January 1001 by Amalric, Bishop of Aix-en-Provence. A pilgrimage has been held at Saint-Ser every Whit Monday since the 14th century. If you wish to plan your trip around it, check the specific date. Another historic site is the 13th-century Chapelle Saint-Roch. The Chapelle Saint-Pancrace stands on the remains of a Gallo-Roman villa; it is not normally open to visitors. A visit is possible only on request and on a special occasion.
The restored fortification walls formed part of the enclosure that protected the medieval castle. They were restored between 2012 and 2015. This places their medieval defensive function in a temporal context with the much later restoration.
The Puyloubier branch of the Musée de la Légion étrangère at the Domaine du Capitaine Danjou houses a unique uniform collection dating from 1831 to 1968. The branch is currently closed for extensive renovation; reopening is planned for summer 2027. If you are planning a museum visit, check the latest information before travelling.
Events and regional products
The Puyloubier tourism association organises the annual “Puyloubier Sainte-Victoire” public hiking event. If you would like to plan your trip around it, find out the event date. Along with the pilgrimage on Whit Monday, the hiking event is a specific occasion to check the calendar when planning.
A regional product is also mentioned: Domaine Saint-Ser produces olive oil with the AOP Aix-en-Provence protected designation of origin.
