Gardanne between the Old Town and Mediterranean Forest
Accommodation in Gardanne
Gardanne can be explored through a range of themes: walks through the Old Town, museums, crafts and trails through Mediterranean woodland. Cycling and a traditional festival round out the options. What you choose to focus on depends on whether you are interested in the town’s history, its landscape or specific routes.
Old Town and Cézanne’s footsteps
The “Visite de la vieille ville” takes you through Gardanne’s Castrum and its narrow streets. The tour is scheduled to take 1 hour and 30 minutes. “Cézanne et le paysage” takes a different focus: this tour passes through the Old Town and over the Colline des Frères. The famous painter visited this hill to paint some of his most significant works. Together, the two walks link the streets of the old town centre with a landscape associated with Cézanne’s work.
Everyday life, mining and crafts
At the Musée Gardanne Autrefois, traditional scenes of daily life are presented in two village houses dating from between 1850 and 1950, as well as in the former Chapel of the White Penitents. These include a kitchen, dining area, bedroom and classroom, along with traditional crafts, toys and wartime memorabilia. The different rooms and themes offer insights into various aspects of everyday life and local history.
At Tuilerie Bossy, you can meet craftspeople and discover techniques and creations in sculpture, mosaic, furniture making, watchmaking, pottery and blacksmithing. Check whether the craftspeople are available before your visit. Puits Yvon Morandat, southwest of Gardanne, is also part of the history of the mining basin: it contributed to the area’s cultural and social identity.
The Mediterranean forest as an exhibition theme
The Ecomusée de la Forêt Méditerranéenne explores the diversity, history and vulnerability of Mediterranean forest ecosystems in a playful, interactive way. The 1,000 m² space, spread across three levels, also looks at the secrets of the soil and the different habitats. Outside, the forest park covers 13 hectares. An approximately 1.5-kilometre-long discovery trail combines riddles and word puzzles with a maze. The exhibition and trail offer different ways to engage with forest-related themes.
Hiking trails with different highlights
The Circuit de La Luynes follows the Luynes river for a long stretch. The route takes in riverside vegetation, a waterfall and centuries-old plane trees around the Pavillon du roi René. At the Sentier du Bois du Verdillon, wooden botanical signs provide information about regional plants; an orientation table stands at the highest point.
The Circuit des Crêtes features various viewpoints over the Massifs de l’Étoile, de Sainte-Victoire and du Ventoux. The hike also explores the coastal limestone hills of Basse-Provence and their characteristic flora, including endemic and rare species. Among the historical remains along the circuit is the “Bastide Nouveau” ruin, acquired by the town of Gardanne.
The Circuit des Vallons crosses the Canal de Provence and joins the GRP Mines d’Énergie. At the Sentier du Mur de Gueidan stands a stone wall built in 1692. It was designed to protect livestock from wolves, feral dogs and theft. The trails therefore offer different highlights: riverbanks and trees, viewpoints, historical remains or botanical information.
Explore Gardanne by bike or at a festival
“À la découverte de Gardanne à vélo” is a cycling tour with 15 stages. It is rated easy and covers 19.9 kilometres. As route specifications may change, check the details before setting out.
