Châteauneuf-le-Rouge: Art, History and Wine
Accommodation in Châteauneuf-Le-Rouge
Châteauneuf-le-Rouge brings together contemporary art, architectural and church history, wine country and culinary experiences.
Art and Architectural History
ARTEUM is a contemporary art museum on the second floor of the Château de l’Hôtel de ville. Its programme has evolved from an initial focus on modern works by Provençal painters towards contemporary art. The museum is open Wednesday to Saturday, from 2 to 6 pm, with free admission. Visiting hours may change; check them before you travel.
The Château de Châteauneuf-le-Rouge, now the town hall, is a 17th-century building with 54 rooms across three levels. Today’s Sainte-Victoire church stands on a site where a chapel was located in the 14th century. The chapel fell into disrepair, was rebuilt in the 17th century, destroyed again during the Revolution and reconstructed in 1825. The parish church of Sainte Victoire is also included in the Pays d’Aix thematic tour of religious heritage. The two histories have different points of emphasis: the château’s story focuses on its construction period and layout, while the church’s is marked by several changes at the same site.
Wine Country and Tastings
Domaine de la Galinière lies at the foot of the Plateau du Cengle, amid a 90-hectare wine estate. From there, expansive views stretch across a valley characterised by vineyards and olive groves.
Part of the western buildings of Château de la Galinière has been converted into a wine cellar open to the public; confirm access before your visit. The château offers guided tours of its vineyards and wine throughout the year. These include insights into the vineyards, terroir and cellar, as well as a tasting. Oenology workshops and tastings of the estate’s six cuvées are also offered year-round. Confirm the current availability of tours and workshops before travelling.
Culinary Events and Choral Festival
For more than 20 years, the Provençal Gastronomy Festival has been held in Châteauneuf-le-Rouge every year on the first Sunday in July. Mastercook9 offers public cooking classes for all ages using local, seasonal produce; once a month, a Michelin-starred chef takes part. The programme frequency and participation terms may change, so check the date and current class details in advance.
The Chorissimo choral festival takes place every year in early June in the park of the Château de Châteauneuf-le-Rouge. The 8-hectare park surrounds the château to the east and south. This means the calendar features two recurring events with different focuses: Chorissimo in early June and the gastronomy festival on the first Sunday in July. Check the dates for the year you plan to travel.
