Valbonne brings together village history, markets and nature along the Brague. When planning your trip, it is useful to keep in mind the different schedules: the Provençal market takes place on Friday mornings, the antiques and flea market on the first Sunday of the month, while the Maison Nature Environnement offers activities throughout the year. This lets you plan your stay around the themes and dates that interest you.

Village history and layout

The village of Valbonne was founded in 1519 on the initiative of Augustin de Grimaldi, Bishop of Grasse and commendatory abbot of Lérins. It grew up beside the Chalaisian abbey, which had been established in 1199. The abbey is therefore around 320 years older than the village.

Valbonne’s streets follow a grid layout and lead to Place des Arcades, which is listed as a Historic Monument. Together, the date of the village’s founding, the abbey and the street grid offer insight into different aspects of the area: its origins, its older historic landmark and the layout of the village.

Weekly and monthly markets

The Provençal market in Valbonne takes place every Friday morning at Place des Arcades and in the village streets. It offers fruit, vegetables, and regional Provençal and French products. The regular Friday schedule can serve as a practical weekly anchor when planning your stay.

The Friday market for producers and direct sales offers local and seasonal products, as well as organic produce. For travelers who pay particular attention to provenance and seasonality when visiting a market, this focus is a useful distinction.

On the first Sunday of every month, the antiques and flea market takes place in Valbonne Village all day. It features around 40 professional exhibitors. Compared with the Friday markets, both the monthly schedule and the selection are different: antiques and second-hand goods take center stage. If you would like to include market days in your trip plans, you can choose between a weekly Friday morning and an all-day Sunday event each month.

Saint Blaise and the winemaking tradition

The winemaking tradition continues through the vines managed by the town and the Saint Blaise festival. The festival takes place on the last weekend of January. The weekend’s program includes a producers’ market, a regional products competition and cooking demonstrations by renowned chefs from the Côte d’Azur. If you would like to combine your trip with the festival, check the dates for the relevant year.

Nature along the Brague

The Maison Nature Environnement is housed in the restored former Moulin de la Calanque on the banks of the Brague, near the village of Valbonne. It offers a year-round Nature Club and family activities focused on biodiversity, water and the protection of natural habitats. The grounds include a herb and vegetable garden as well as a pond, adding to the site’s educational value.

Valbonne offers nine hiking trails where visitors can discover the flora and fauna of southern France. A specific landscape route along the Brague is the Biot–Valbonne connection: it passes through a wild, protected riparian forest with alders, hazels and ash trees, as well as remarkable calcareous tufa cascades. In addition to the local flora and fauna, the riparian forest and tufa cascades are natural features in their own right.
