Cantaron: Cultural History and Notable Places
Accommodation in Cantaron
If you’re looking for a hotel in Cantaron, the local landmarks offer concrete starting points for planning your trip around your interests. The town’s history is reflected in its church architecture, a historic mire, memorial sites and traces of everyday life in the past. The routes also differ: they range from the GR5, which passes through Cantaron, to a route from Mont Macaron with a more technically demanding section.
Saint-Joseph Church and Views
Saint-Joseph Church was built on June 30, 1788, as the parish church of Cantaron, in the Baroque style of the 18th century. Its interior is Late Baroque in design, with two chapels flanking the nave. The church also has an unusual triangular bell tower. This brings different architectural features into focus: the tower and the design of the church interior. The church forecourt adds a panoramic view over the Paillon Valley, Drap and the Baie des Anges to this architectural setting.
Mire du Mont Macaron and Routes
The Mire du Mont Macaron was first used in 1891. It faces north and is 6.5 kilometres from the observatory. It is located in a small building on Mont Macaron in the commune of Cantaron and is well known to hikers. Unlike the panorama from the church forecourt, its precise reference points are its north-facing orientation and its distance from the observatory.
The route descriptions also differ in their course. The GR5 passes through Cantaron and offers views of the Baie des Anges. Another route descends from the summit of Mont Macaron via Col de Bordinas to Cantaron along a more technically demanding section of the GR 51. One description therefore identifies the route through the area and its views; the other describes a descent, giving its starting point, pass and destination.
Memorial Sites and Local History
On Place de l’École stands a stele dedicated to Thérésius ODDO. It commemorates a resistance fighter from the Paillon Valley who fought against Nazi oppression. The resistance group SURCOUF was formed in his home. The “Main Sculptée” is an original work of Cantaron’s cultural heritage.
Village Oven and Cognas Washhouse
The old village oven was built from sandstone, a rock found in the Paillon Valley and known as Pierre de Savel. Today, the oven is used only for the patron saint’s festival. The Cognas washhouse was supplied by the Boussiola spring, which was also used to irrigate the gardens; the washhouse was used until 1970. The two sites thus represent different periods: use of the oven for the patron saint’s festival continues today, while use of the washhouse ended in 1970.
