Several reasons to visit come together in Sainte-Agnès: the underground fort, historic buildings, a panorama at the Château, the trail to Menton and recurring events. When looking for a hotel, it may help to first decide whether you want to experience the village mainly through its history, a hike or an event. These highlights differ considerably and can be easily distinguished when planning your trip.

Fort and Château: History and Panorama

The Fort de Sainte-Agnès was built between 1932 and 1938. The underground complex was excavated deep into the rock beneath the village. Today, the fort is a museum open to the public that presents its military history. As visiting arrangements and opening periods may change, check the municipality’s information before your visit.

The Château offers a different focus: its tower and foundations date from the late 10th century. The viewpoint at the Château overlooks the Bay of Menton, the Mediterranean and the mountains, offering a 360-degree panorama. The fort and Château therefore appeal to different interests: the museum focuses on military history, while the viewpoint offers views across the named landscapes and the Château’s historic structures.

Church and Chapel

The sacred sites also tell different stories. The Church of Notre-Dame-des-Neiges was rebuilt in the new village in the 16th century and houses remarkable treasures. The Chapelle Saint-Sébastien was built in 1610. The residents of Sainte-Agnès hoped that building it would ward off the plague and other epidemics. Their historical associations therefore differ: the church is notable for its rebuilding and treasures, while the chapel reflects the hope at the time of warding off disease.

The Trail to Menton

The Chemin de Sainte-Agnès connects the village to Menton via the Col de Garde. The one-way journey takes two hours. This is a specific time estimate for the route in one direction, not for a round trip. Account for the return journey separately if you include the trail in your plans. This makes the hike a distinct focus from a visit centered primarily on the historic buildings.

Events Throughout the Year

The Fête de la Lavande takes place every year in late July, bringing the whole village together for numerous events. These include a craft market and lavender distillation. The Critérium is organized each year on May 1 by the Association des Randonneurs de Sainte-Agnès; it offers a chance to discover these trails in a convivial atmosphere. The two events differ both in timing and character: the lavender festival brings together events in the village, while the Critérium focuses on discovering the trails together. If you are planning a trip around either date, check the event dates and the program or current edition in advance.
