Discover Saint-Antonin
Accommodation in Saint-Antonin
Saint-Antonin sits at an altitude of 800 metres on a rocky ridge. The valley basin, shaped by eroded schist, also defines the landscape, and the village offers beautiful panoramic views. Its elevation, rock and schist give the place a distinctive landscape. Alongside its outdoor attractions, you can get to know Saint-Antonin through its history and local hiking trails. If you are looking for hotels in Saint-Antonin, these features can help you decide what kind of stay you would like to plan.
Landscape and local history
The first written mention of Saint-Antonin dates from 1091 and refers to a church of the same name. In the first half of the 13th century, a fortified settlement called Saint-Antonin is mentioned. A village was built next to this settlement, but it fell into decline towards the end of the Middle Ages. In 1438, Saint-Antonin was declared uninhabited. The sequence runs from the earliest mention, through the fortified settlement, to a significant break in the history of settlement. It therefore does not represent a continuously inhabited history of the place.
The local heritage includes a very well-preserved washhouse. It complements the historical dates with a tangible architectural feature of Saint-Antonin. A medieval castle with a keep is also located nearby. It is another point of reference for regional history, but lies in the surrounding area rather than within the village itself.
A more recent, dated distinction is also part of the picture: in the “Villes et villages étoilés” competition, Saint-Antonin was among the one-star municipalities in 2025. Alongside the ridge, schist landscape and medieval history, local hiking and cycling options are also available when planning a trip.
Hiking trails and cycling route
Saint-Antonin is the starting point for numerous hiking trails. There are routes for beginners as well as experienced hikers. This range makes it important to choose carefully: plan your outing based on the information for the specific trail and the level you have in mind. This helps you fit the hike more deliberately into your stay, rather than assuming every route has the same character simply because it starts from the same place.
For cyclists, the “Entre Var et Estéron” Boucle d’Azur connects Puget-Théniers, La Penne and Saint-Antonin. In addition to the numerous hiking trails, there is therefore a named cycling route linking the village with two other named places. This is a clear distinction to keep in mind when planning: hiking starts in Saint-Antonin, while the cycling route connects the three places. Check the route details before setting off so your plans are up to date.
