Peymeinade: Village History, Fragrant Flowers and Summer Events
Accommodation in Peymeinade
Peymeinade offers several reasons to choose it as a place to stay: historic buildings in the old village, the region’s fragrant-flower culture, and seasonal events in the Pinède Daudet. The setting at the foot of the Alps, shaped by olive trees and flower fields, is also part of the destination’s character.
Local History and Visible Heritage
The Chapelle Saint-Marc was built around 1760 by local residents and dedicated to Saint Mark, the patron saint of grapevines and wheat. Its murals depict rural scenes: the wheat harvest, grapevines, a flute player, and a farandole. The chapel thus brings together religious heritage and scenes from earlier country life.
In the old village, older houses cluster around an 18th-century church and a 19th-century round fountain with lion heads. The present-day Église Saint-Roch replaced an earlier chapel on the same site. It is dedicated to Saint Roch, the patron saint against the plague that struck the region in the 14th century. On Place Gervais Court, a washhouse and a small fountain were among the village’s earliest water-supply facilities, dating from 1873. The washhouse was restored and roofed in 1938.
Another mural, “train des Pignes,” is on the façade of Peymeinade’s Bureau d’Information Municipal. It adds a motif on a public building to the area’s historic architecture. The Saint-Roch festival is celebrated in the first days of August each year; exact dates may vary.
Fragrant Flowers and Regional Tradition
Until the middle of the 20th century, Peymeinade was predominantly rural. Farmers grew jasmine, roses, violets, and tuberoses for the perfume factories of Grasse. The surrounding flower fields and olive trees remain part of the landscape today; the area’s agricultural history gives its fragrant-flower culture a tangible local connection.
At Domaine du Mas de l’Olivine, guided tours are offered about the fragrant flowers typical of the Pays de Grasse. Visitors can also sample candied flowers made with flowers grown on site. Check the tour options in advance; prior arrangements may be needed for the tasting.
Summer Events, Swimming and Activities
The Pinède Daudet hosts open-air performances and events throughout the summer. Open-air film screenings take place there on Wednesday evenings in July and August. As the seasonal program may change, it is advisable to check the dates before your visit.
The Piscine de Peymeinade is an outdoor swimming pool with a 25-metre main pool, a smaller pool for children and recreational activities, and a paddling pool in the Pinède area. Square Cauvin has a children’s playground near Place du Centenaire. The town’s sports complex also has an uncovered concrete skatepark. These facilities offer options ranging from swimming and play to skating, without requiring the same kind of visit.
Nearby destinations also offer options for walks: trails along the Canal de la Siagne and walks in the Peygros forest are possible there. Both are in the wider area around Peymeinade and complement the sights in the old village with outdoor experiences beyond the village centre.
Practical Information
A regular bus service connects Peymeinade with the town of Grasse. Check routes and timetables through Sillages before travelling. A market is held on Place du Centenaire Provençal on Mondays; as market times may change, check the date before you arrive. Together with the annual Saint-Roch festival and the seasonal program at the Pinède Daudet, this information provides practical guidance for planning your stay.
