Les Ferres lies in a deeply rugged mid-mountain landscape. The area ranges from 235 m by the Estéron to the Crête de la Perrière at 1,270 m. These elevations place the landscape between the river valley and the mountain ridge. The village is built on the southern slope of Mont Saint-Michel, giving its location a specific connection to a named mountain rather than just the general mid-mountain landscape.

Narrow lanes, terrace and landscape

The “ponti” lead into a labyrinth of narrow lanes. The lanes and the terrace with its plane trees offer contrasting impressions: here, the narrow layout shapes the village, while there, the view stretches out over the surrounding area. The terrace offers views across the Estéron Valley to the peaks of the Mercantour. When picturing Les Ferres, you can therefore take in both its winding lanes and the views of the valley and peaks.

Religious buildings and history

The Sainte-Julie Oratory dates from the 17th or 18th century. Its specific architectural features include an open façade and a semicircular barrel vault. The term describes a lengthwise vault with a semicircular cross-section. This provides a brief way to identify the architectural form without equating it with the history of other buildings.

The Saint-Valentin Chapel is also dated to the 17th or 18th century, although its date remains uncertain. It was restored or newly built in the second half of the 19th century. These two possibilities should be considered together: the building’s later alteration is noted, while it remains unclear whether this was a restoration or a new construction.

To visit the Church of Saint-Jacques-ApĂ´tre, you must request the key from the municipal administration. Confirm access locally again before your trip. This ensures that the specific access requirement is taken into account in your plans, without assuming that the church is open at all times.

Another historical topic is the first castle associated with Les Ferres and Conségudes. It is said to date from the 12th century and is now in ruins. The cautious dating belongs to this account; the ruins are the present-day condition stated for the castle.

Circular hike and getting there

The “Bouyon – Gorges de l’Estéron” route is a difficult PR circular hike covering 12.3 km and taking five hours. It passes through the municipalities of Bouyon and Les Ferres. It should therefore be considered a standalone hike when planning your day, rather than equated with a short walk through the lanes. The distance, duration and difficulty level provide three specific points of reference for distinguishing this tour from a visit to the buildings and village scenery.

From Nice, the road to Les Ferres follows the M6202 bis and then the D1. Check road conditions before setting out. When planning your stay, you can choose between two different focuses: the buildings and lanes in the village, or the longer circular hike that passes through Les Ferres and Bouyon.
