La Tour – Chapels, Mills and Mountain Landscape
Accommodation in La Tour
When looking for a hotel in La Tour, it is worth considering the character of the destination. The centre of La Tour-sur-Tinée has a medieval feel, with cobbled lanes and painted façades around a square. La Tour-sur-Tinée lies on a ridge above the valley. Wooded peaks, gentle hills and sweeping views across the surrounding terrain define the landscape. Trip planning therefore brings two interests together: the historic character of the village and the surrounding countryside. You can consider whether your trip will focus more on the built heritage or on hiking.
Chapels and Art History
The Chapelle des Pénitents blancs de La Tour was classified as a historic monument by decree on 18 April 1944. Its oldest section houses an exceptional series of frescoes from the late 15th century. The cycle includes the Last Judgement, the Virtues, the Vices and scenes from the Passion of Christ. The frescoes have been protected as movable cultural property since 1908. The dates mark different aspects of the site’s history: the period when the paintings were created, their protected status and the chapel’s later classification. Thus, both the subject matter and the protection of the frescoes form part of the historical context of this religious building.
The main construction phase of the Chapelle Saint-Jean-Baptiste dates to the 14th century; it was classified as a historic monument on 14 September 1943. The construction phase and the monument classification mark different points in time. The church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption-et-Saint-Martin also houses an altarpiece in the Rosary Chapel and a painting depicting the Rosary.
The Chapelle Saint-Jean-Baptiste d’Alloche is in the La Vignasse district and can be reached on foot via the GR 510 hiking trail. This makes it possible to combine a specific destination with a hiking route; check the trail conditions locally before setting out.
Mills in the Béal District
The former oil and grain mills dating from the 18th century have been preserved in the artisan district of Béal. The municipal oil mill, “lou defissi,” is also located there. It is a hydraulic mill: water drives a metal wheel with paddles from above. The wheel is called a “roda.” Since 1992, the mill has been classified as a “machine à extraire des fluides” among the historic monuments. The preserved mills and the technical design of the municipal oil mill add a chapter on milling technology to the village’s architectural history.
Hiking Routes and the FĂŞte de la graine
Several hiking routes start from La Tour, ranging from easy circular walks to more challenging trails leading to neighbouring villages. Choose a route to suit the kind of outing you want: a circular walk or a more challenging trail with a neighbouring village as its destination. Check the conditions for the chosen route locally before setting out.
An event date may also be relevant when planning your trip: the Fête de la graine takes place every year in April. For the 2025 edition, an exchange of vegetable seeds and plants, as well as a producers’ market, was planned. If the festival is important to your trip, check the specific event dates for your chosen period.
