Hiking in Cuébris
Cuébris offers several distinct points of interest for a trip: hiking destinations in the countryside and the history of its church, château and Forge Isnard. A hike to the Riou de Cuébris leads to a 30 m waterfall and numerous natural pools. The recommended period for hiking in Cuébris is from April to November. If you’d like to combine your stay with a hike, this seasonal recommendation gives you a specific timeframe for your trip.
The Bau de l’Arc hiking route takes an average of four hours and has a positive elevation gain of 630 m. It starts and ends at the Jardin public de la Croix in Cuébris, so the starting and finishing points are in the same place. The duration, elevation gain and start and end points provide specific details for planning your route.
Another hiking route is the fourth stage of the Cuébris–Sigale–Roquesteron–Grasse loop trail. It is the longest stage of the loop, runs along a balcony above the Estéron and crosses the Sauma Longa ridges. The Bau de l’Arc can be assessed by its average duration and elevation gain; for this stage, the focus is on its place in the loop and the course of the route through the landscape. The hiking destinations described therefore differ according to the planning details provided for each.
The church and local history
The Church of Notre Dame de la Consolation is integrated into Cuébris’s medieval defensive system. Its architectural features combine several traditions: the apse is Romanesque, the chapel Gothic and the vault Baroque. There is also a four-sided, Neo-Gothic bell tower dating from the 19th century. The church is also part of the Regional Nature Park of Préalpes d’Azur’s Romanesque churches trail and the Itinera Romanica heritage route. It can therefore be understood both through its architectural details and through its inclusion in two named heritage routes.
The Château de Cuébris was built in 1320 on a very steep rocky outcrop against which the village is nestled. A drawbridge stood in front of the entrance facing the village. In June 1704, the château was besieged during the War of the Spanish Succession. Its construction date, location and entrance provide clues to the history of the château; the 1704 siege adds a specific event from the building’s later history.
Craftsmanship at Forge Isnard
Forge Isnard also tells the story of the village. Blacksmithing and toolmaking were practised there between 1896 and 1916. The building is constructed of stone and cement; the forge chimney, built of brick and cement, was restored in 1929. Forge Isnard thus brings together its former craft use and specific architectural details. Forge Isnard opened to the public in September 2019. Check current visitor access locally before your visit.
