L’Escarène: Baroque Heritage, Mills and Trails
Accommodation in L'Escarène
When planning a stay in L’Escarène, two themes stand out: the town’s history and the routes connected with Col de Braus. Until the 19th century, L’Escarène was a medieval stopping point on the Route du Sel. This historical context frames the cultural sites; buildings, religious traditions and mills each add their own focus.
Baroque architecture and music
The Church of Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens, together with the chapels of the White and Black Penitents, forms an exceptional Baroque ensemble classified as a historic monument. The focus is therefore not just on a single building, but on a shared architectural landmark. The Grinda organ adds a musical dimension: it was built by the Grinda brothers in 1791 and is still used for concerts. The history of the architecture and its use for concerts today are two distinct aspects of the cultural heritage.
On the mountainside, the community of L’Escarène had the Chapelle Saint-Pancrace built towards the end of the 17th century. The chapel has long served as a pilgrimage site. The old ceremonial traditions associated with it were initially religious and later took on a festive character. Every year, a procession makes its way to the chapel for the Feast of Saint Augustine. If you would like to include this custom in your travel plans, check the dates in advance: the procession is a specific annual occasion, not simply a visit available at any time.
Mills and local traditions
The municipal oil mill is a mill of the Greek type. Its equipment includes stone millstones, a hand press, scourtins, a waterwheel and settling basins. These features give the mill a distinctive technical character, separate from the sacred buildings and traditions. Check the current arrangements for visitors before your visit.
An older regional tourism brochure also describes an olive oil visit offered by reservation. It includes a 17th-century oil mill, an olive oil tasting and an introduction to AOC Olive de Nice. If you plan to take this visit, please confirm the current booking arrangements. Visits to the Moulin Musée are possible year-round; check the current arrangements before your visit. A grain mill houses the Musée du Cougourdon, which displays works made from decorated gourds. Here too, check the current arrangements for opening.
Planning routes and tours
For 2026, the seventh stage of the Cols Connectés is listed as starting in L’Escarène and finishing at the summit of Col de Braus in the municipality of Lucéram. The stage is 10 kilometres long, with 662 metres of elevation gain. Recheck the event details and conditions before basing your plans on them. Col de Braus can be crossed in summer and winter; you should also check the weather and route updates before setting out.
La ScarenaBerra offers a different perspective: it is a 12-kilometre botanical hiking trail. When weighing up your options, you can compare their distinct features: the botanical character and stated length of this trail with the stage’s start point, summit destination, distance and elevation gain. Check the current conditions on the hiking trail in advance.
For broader hiking plans, the Pays des Paillons provides a regional context: across its 11 municipalities, more than 500 kilometres of trails link hamlets and villages from the valleys to the ridgelines. This overview of the routes offers a wider framework if you would like to include trails beyond individual town destinations in your plans.
