Breil-sur-Roya is a commune in the Mercantour National Park. The historic village lies in a narrow riverside area, in a bend of the Roya between the river and the rock face. This setting shapes the village’s appearance and gives it a distinctive landscape.

Lac aux cygnes is a small artificial reservoir with emerald-green water, just a few steps from the village centre. It’s a pleasant place for a walk. It also provides a landmark close to the centre if you’d like to combine a visit to the village with a stroll by the water.

Terraced olive groves, the Chapelle Saint-Antoine and the medieval Porte de Gènes still stand on the eastern slope within the former fortification walls. The surviving sections of the town wall run along the Roya to this gate east of the village. Above Breil-sur-Roya, the rocky ridge is also home to the remains of the castle and the Tour de la Cruella tower. These historic remains are spread across the hillside, the riverside and the ridge.

Church and railway history

The Église Santa-Maria-in-Albis was completed around 1700 on the site of a medieval church that had been badly damaged in the first half of the 17th century. It was designated a historic monument in 1978. These two dates refer to different things: one places the church in the context of its construction, while the other marks its later designation.

The Ecomusée du train des Merveilles is housed in the former locomotive depot at Breil-sur-Roya station, built in 1927. Its exhibitions cover hydropower and transport. An HO-scale model railway recreates characteristic places along the route over the Col de Tende. The museum brings together technical subjects and a miniature representation of the railway line.

The Ecomusée also has a driving simulator. As specific visitor attractions may change, check whether it is available before travelling.

A Stacada is a folkloric event featuring a costumed historical reenactment of a popular uprising. It has been celebrated every four years on the third Sunday in July since 1960. If the date matters to your travel plans, check locally before travelling to find out when the next edition will take place.

Hiking trails, cycling routes and water activities

The commune has numerous hiking trails of varying difficulty. When planning, you can take into account both the range of trails and their respective levels of difficulty. The mountain bike loops offer a different way to discover the area, taking visitors to the hamlets of Piène Haute and Libre. The hiking trails are spread across the commune, while the loops focus on these two hamlets.

White-water activities in Breil-sur-Roya include canyoning, rafting, canoeing and kayaking, tubing, and canoe-rafting. Local regulations and conditions can affect what is available, so check the current situation if you’re planning one of these activities.

Trout fishing is possible at Lac aux cygnes and in flowing waters outside the Roya. A cross-border no-kill stretch is also available. The information therefore covers both specific waters for trout fishing and a separate cross-border stretch.
