Sepvret offers two specific starting points for planning a trip: hiking trails in the Sèvre Niortaise valley and buildings with varied histories. The routes can be distinguished by length and starting point, while the cultural landmarks offer a glimpse of both architecture and the parish’s past. This can help you decide before your trip which aspects of the town matter most for your stay.

Hiking Trails and Landscape

The 8 km “Sentier des sources et des lavoirs” (Trail of Springs and Washhouses) starts either at the Grand-Fontaines or at the town hall. The 5.5 km “Chemin de Foucault” (Foucault Path) starts in Brégion. The difference between the two trails is clear from their length alone: the Sentier des sources et des lavoirs is longer, while the Chemin de Foucault is the shorter of the two listed options. When planning your route, also take their different starting points into account. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

The trails in Sepvret pass through the green valley of the Sèvre Niortaise, shaped by numerous springs and waterways. The Grand-Fontaines are described as the source of the Sèvre Niortaise and are also one of the possible starting points for the longer trail. Upstream, between the Grand-Fontaines and the Pont de Sepvret, part of the valley has been recognized by the Deux-Sèvres Department as an “Espace Naturel Sensible” (Sensitive Natural Area). When planning your route, you will therefore encounter both specific starting points and a designated section of the valley.

Buildings and Local History

The parish church of Saint-Martin was rebuilt in 1905, next to an earlier church. The new building was designed by Alcide Boutaud, an architect from Poitiers. Its features include a single-nave layout, a round-arched barrel vault, and a calotte dome. These architectural features give the church its own distinctive place in the town’s history. If you are interested in architectural forms, it is worth considering the information about the nave and the vaults together: they describe different elements of the interior architecture.

The parish’s history can also be placed in a chronological context. Sepvret’s historic parish structure grew out of the two former parishes of Sepvret and La Barre. Around 1769, services for the parish of La Barre were moved to the church in Sepvret. These two details tell the story of the earlier development of the church structures and add historical context to the building history of Saint-Martin Church.

The Logis de Brégion, a manor house in Sepvret dating from the 15th century, is also part of the architectural heritage. The Brégion dovecote also dates from the 15th century and has 2,200 nesting places. The manor house and dovecote are two distinct examples of the town’s historic buildings; their shared date provides a useful timeframe for exploring local architectural history.

The historic residence known as the Logis des Foucault was protected by a decree dated December 15, 1928. Another historic object is a processional banner of Saint Martin from Saint-Martin Church. It depicts the armored saint on horseback sharing his cloak with a kneeling poor man. Natural lilies and a star decorate the background. The banner complements the architectural history with a movable cultural artifact depicting a specific scene.

The former church of Saint-Martin was converted into a cultural hall. Cultural events such as concerts, exhibitions, and conferences are intended to be held there. This conversion connects the history of the former church building with a planned cultural use; the types of events listed indicate what is planned.
