Limalonges
Accommodation in Limalonges
For planning your trip, Limalonges offers several distinct points of interest: Romanesque architecture, prehistoric monuments, and the landscape of Glassac. A circular walk of about 7.9 kilometres and activities with alpacas are also among the local attractions. This lets you decide whether you are more interested in architectural and cultural history, nature, or a specific activity.
Romanesque church and historic monuments
The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste is considered a church typical of the region’s Romanesque architecture. The apse and entrance portal probably date from the 11th century. The apse, choir, and nave have barrel vaults; the Gothic north aisle was added in the 15th century. Thus, different periods meet in the building’s history: the older parts, probably dating to the 11th century, stand alongside a later Gothic extension. The church has been fully classified as a French historic monument by decree since 11 April 1975.
The Dolmen dit La Pierre Pèse is also a point of reference for the area’s early history. It dates from the Neolithic period and is described as a burial monument and the remains of a tumulus that has since disappeared. It has been classified as a French historic monument since 1889. This year refers to its classification, not the dolmen’s date of construction. Take the D948 past Les Maisons Blanches towards Civray; the site is on the left, shortly before the railway line.
The Tumulus de Nouverteils is another monument identified by name: it was listed as a historic monument by decree on 21 June 1993. Keep the two names distinct when planning your visit: La Pierre Pèse refers to the Neolithic dolmen, while the 1993 listing applies to the Tumulus de Nouverteils.
Glassac and the circular walk
Glassac is a small wooded hillside east of Limalonges and is designated as a ZNIEFF natural area for its fauna and flora. Trees and shrubs include oaks and hornbeams, as well as boxwood and hazel; regionally rare flora also grows there. Wetlands with diverse flora lie in the lower part. These varied landscape features give the area a different focus from the historic buildings: here, the emphasis is on woodland, tree and shrub cover, and wetland habitats.
The Circuit de la Roche Bardin - Périssac circular walk passes through the woodland of Glassac and then through the hamlets of Périssac and La Roche Bardin. The loop is about 7.9 kilometres long and elongated in shape. Its length, shape, and route help you assess the walk for your plans without assuming a walking time or difficulty level. The named sections are clearly distinct: the route first passes through the woodland, then continues through the two hamlets.
Activities with alpacas
Nana Mac Alpacas is a small farm in Limalonges that offers activities with alpacas. These include mindfulness, yoga, shared snacks, walks, feeding, and arts and crafts. The range spans calm or creative experiences as well as activities centred on the animals. If you are planning a particular activity, check its availability in advance.
