Cherveux – Château, Landscape Garden and Plan d’eau
Accommodation in Cherveux
There are several themes to explore during a stay in Cherveux: the history and architecture of the Château, the church of Saint-Pierre, the « À fleur d’eau » landscape garden, a signposted discovery trail, and activities at the Plan d’eau. If you’re looking for a hotel in Cherveux, you can first consider whether architectural history, garden design, a walk through the countryside or recreational activities should shape your itinerary.
Castle architecture and local history
The Château de Cherveux was built in the 15th century by Robert Cunningham. The Scottish captain had served Charles VII and later became captain of the guard to Louis XI. The complex has an irregular pentagonal fortress layout, wide moats, slender towers, a drawbridge and a keep. A keep is the main tower of a castle complex. The rampart walk on the fourth floor offers panoramic views over the village and the Niort plain. Thus, the focus is not only on the fortress’s design, but also on a specific viewpoint and two distinct parts of the view.
The church of Saint-Pierre is right next to the Château. It was built in the 12th century and extensively remodelled at the beginning of the 20th century. Its stained-glass windows were also replaced at the beginning of the 20th century; they depict a long series of saints and holy figures. Its history of construction therefore spans from its medieval origins to later alterations and windows.
Garden and landscape
The « À fleur d’eau » landscape garden covers five hectares and includes varied landscape areas as well as several biotopes. Around 40,000 trees shape the grounds. Stone sculptures, stained-glass works and metal artworks, connected with the vegetation, add to the garden. The garden offers a different focus from the Château: while the latter foregrounds fortress design and architectural history, « À fleur d’eau » brings together landscape areas, biotopes and art forms. This gives you two distinct options for planning your trip: historic architecture and a designed garden landscape.
Discovery trail and activities by the water
The signposted Sentier de découverte de Bouriquaille is almost two kilometres long. It starts at the former temple, goes around the school and then winds through the countryside. The route description therefore takes you from the starting point at the former temple, past the school grounds and on into a rural section. If you plan to follow the trail, check the route details locally.
The Plan d’eau de Cherveux / Saint-Christophe was created in 1972 on the initiative of the mayors of Cherveux and Saint-Christophe-sur-Roc. It lies within the territory of both communes. A water-ski lift and high-ropes course activities are offered at the Plan d’O de Cherveux–Saint-Christophe. Seasonal conditions and availability with the operator may change. Before your visit, check whether the activity you’re interested in is available during your trip. This will help you choose between the cultural and landscape attractions and these recreational activities in line with your travel plans.
