Le Tallud brings together several distinct themes to consider when planning a trip: its connection to the Thouet landscape, historic buildings, a waymarked walking trail, the Plan d’eau la Vernière leisure area and a weekly market. If you’re looking for a hotel for a trip to Le Tallud, your personal interests can help guide your choice of location: are you mainly interested in architecture, visiting a market or a particular leisure activity?

Landscape and regional context

The “Bassin du Thouet amont” Natura 2000 site covers 7,000 hectares and includes 15 municipalities, among them Le Tallud. Its protected-area status places the town within a landscape shared by several municipalities. A specific connection to the river can be seen at the Empince weir, which spans the Thouet in Le Tallud. The site’s regional context and a particular structure on the river therefore offer distinct perspectives. Le Tallud also belongs to an area awarded the “Pays d'art et d'histoire” label. This distinction also has a regional context and adds a broader perspective to the local buildings.

Château, church and wayside cross

La Péchellerie is Le Tallud’s château and was first mentioned at the end of the 15th century. Two pepper-pot-shaped towers remain; they were shortened in 1929. The first mention and the later alteration to the towers mark different stages in the building’s history.

Saint-Saturnin parish church has undergone few changes since the 12th century and reflects the Romanesque style of buildings in the Gâtine. At the west portal, a porch known as a “ballet” shelters the entrance. This porch was rebuilt in the mid-19th century. The church thus offers two distinct points of interest: its character, little changed over a long period, and the history of its portal.

The Calvaire de la Foye was erected in 1936 and restored by the municipality in 2026. The two dates mark its construction and a later municipal restoration. Along with the château and church, it adds another local landmark to Le Tallud’s architectural history.

Walking trail, leisure and market

The “Le Tallud - Vers la Trébesse d'Azay-sur-Thouet” walking trail starts at Place de l'église. It is marked yellow at first, then yellow and red along the GR de Pays du Thouet. For navigation, both the named starting point and the sequence of markings are important.

At Plan d'eau la Vernière, there is a playground, a boules area, fishing opportunities and picnic facilities. Unlike the walking trail, this leisure option can be identified by its named facilities and activities; for the trail, the starting point and sequence of markings serve as guides. Part of the leisure area is accessible to people with reduced mobility. If accessibility is important when planning your visit, note that this information applies only to part of the area.

A food market takes place every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Place de l'Église. The market gives Saturday morning a specific time reference. The walking trail also starts at Place de l'église: for the market, the day of the week and time matter; for the trail, it’s the starting point and sequence of markings. If you plan to visit the market, schedule your stay around the stated hours.
