History, a biennial cultural gathering and a current weekly schedule stand side by side. Which topics you include in your plans also depends on the specific event and class times.

Mill history at the Négremus Mill

The Négremus Mill, also called Négremur, was previously a cloth mill. In 1516, it became the first documented paper mill in the Charente; paper production continued there for several centuries. The transition from cloth to paper production and the long period of paper-making give the mill its historical significance.

An envelope bearing the watermark of the Négremus Mill is kept in the archives of Amsterdam. The watermark shows a jester’s head beneath a crown. Alongside details about the trade and its history, this offers a striking, unusual image from the mill’s past.

Also part of the story is the history of the Lizonne and its mills: in the 17th century, they gained European significance through their connections with Flemish merchants. The dates refer to different aspects: 1516 marks the conversion of the Négremus Mill, while the 17th century marks the importance of the Lizonne mills.

Saint-Cybard Church and its historical layers

The centre of Palluaud is clustered around the 12th-century Saint-Cybard Church. In 1880, the church was given a spire and two side chapels. Its architectural history thus offers two specific points of reference: the date of the church and the later additions.

The church also houses an altar and tabernacle ensemble with wings and an exposition canopy. On 8 March 2002, it was listed as an object worthy of protection. The dates have different roles: the 12th century dates the church, 1880 marks the spire and side chapels, and 2002 marks the ensemble’s listing.

Couvige: a biennial event

The Couvige de Palluaud is a gathering of lace-makers. It takes place every two years in September as part of Heritage Days and lasts one day. For planning purposes, it is useful to distinguish between the recurring schedule and the individual date: September every two years describes the general timing, while the date of each event should be checked before travelling.

Yoga and French cuisine

La Traversante in Palluaud has built a regular, welcoming community of yoga students. There are currently two weekly Vinyasa Flow classes: “Midweek Motivation” on Wednesday evenings and “Saturday Smoothie” on Saturday mornings. Lighter and more challenging variations are offered for both classes.

The classes differ by day of the week and time of day, while the basic format remains Vinyasa Flow. If you would like to plan around a class, confirm the times before your visit, as the schedule may change.

At the Bistrot de Palluaud, Loraine and head chef Arthur welcome guests on the terrace or indoors. They serve French dishes made with high-quality local ingredients. If you plan to visit the bistro, check the current menu in advance, as the selection and availability may vary.
