Accommodation in La Couronne
La Couronne offers several clear starting points for a stay that takes in both culture and nature. Local themes range from Romanesque religious architecture and paper and cardboard production to Natura 2000 habitats and a wetland. When looking for a hotel in La Couronne, you can consider which of these themes you would like to shape your trip most.
Architectural History and Industrial Heritage
The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste was built around 1100 and is an example of Angoumois Romanesque architecture. It has been classified as a Monument historique since 29 September 1903. The construction date and the protection date mark two distinct chapters in its history: its medieval origins and its later heritage protection.
The Château de l'Oisellerie dates from the mid-15th century and was an outbuilding of the Abbey of Notre-Dame de la Couronne. A decree dated 8 July 1911 classified it as a Monument historique. Its connection to the abbey is part of its history, as is its later official protection status.
The history of the Moulin Ă papier de la Courade can be traced through its successive uses: the Moulin Ă papier was built in 1837 on the site of a paper mill dating from 1634; in 1904, it was converted into a cardboard factory. The change from paper to cardboard production makes the different industrial phases at this site easy to follow.
The new name La Tréfilerie was given in 2024 in connection with the site's industrial past. La Tréfilerie houses three separate cultural spaces: a theatre, an exhibition hall, and a media library. The cultural offering thus encompasses different types of spaces rather than being limited to a single venue.
20th-century architecture is also part of the local landscape: the Ecole élémentaire Marie-Curie has been awarded the “Architecture contemporaine remarquable” designation. Its design combines the geometric forms characteristic of Art Deco with references to regionalist architecture. The Jardin public Eugène Bureau was designed by Eugène Bureau.
Protected Habitats and Landscapes
The Chaumes des Séverins are calcareous grasslands classified as a Natura 2000 site. Sheep graze the 14-hectare area to preserve its open habitats and prevent excessive scrub encroachment. This allows characteristic and rare plants, as well as a distinctive range of wildlife including butterflies and grasshoppers, to thrive.
The Marais du Pradeau offers a different focus: it is a wetland and a reminder of the former peat bogs and marshes of the Boëme. A total of 71 plant species and 115 animal species have been recorded there. The two natural areas therefore represent distinct habitats: calcareous open grassland maintained by grazing at the Chaumes, and a wetland at the Marais associated with former peat bogs and marshes.
Bicycles and Cycle Routes
Modalis bicycles are available for self-service at the PEM. La Couronne and its surroundings also have numerous cycle routes, so the network described is not limited to the town itself. If cycling is important to your plans, check in advance whether the self-service scheme is available on your travel dates. Service availability and details of the cycle network may change.
