Discover Mansle in the Charente Valley
Accommodation in Mansle
Mansle combines the river landscape of the Charente Valley with nature, walking trails and cultural attractions. The options range from marked trails and a cycling route to a swimming pool and distinctive details in Saint-Léger Church. To plan your visit, you can choose according to the kind of day you have in mind: exercise on a route, a chance to enjoy nature and scenery, or a cultural stop.
River, nature and activities on the water
Mansle lies in the heart of the Charente Valley, upstream from Angoulême. The valley is designated a Natura 2000 site and classified as a Special Protection Area (SPA). The “Vallée de la Charente” area serves year-round as a resting place for 37 bird species of community interest. The valley’s protected status and importance as a resting place are therefore among the area’s nature highlights.
The Prairie de Goué interpretive trail is 4.2 km long, starts at Camping du Champion and follows the Charente. You can cross the river by chain ferry. If you plan to make this crossing, it is best to check the timetable before your visit. There is also a canoe and kayak base at the “Champion” site, where you can canoe and kayak on the river. This means you can choose between a riverside trail, a crossing and a trip on the water as different ways to spend your visit.
Walking trails and choosing a route
The “Balade Nature et Patrimoine” is a marked circular trail suitable for beginners, hikers and families. It passes through shaded areas and ends at the fuchsia collection in the flower park. Its circular route, shaded sections and named destination give this trail its own character. It offers a different experience from the Prairie de Goué interpretive trail, which follows the Charente.
On a walk around Mansle-les-Fontaines, you can discover around ten fountains. For a different view of the surrounding area, the “Sentier des fontaines” offers a panorama of the Charente Valley from the “grandes combes de Puychenin.” These two walks offer different attractions: fountains on the town walk and a valley view from the trail. If you have a particular preference, you can decide which of these experiences you would like to shape your exploration.
Cycling route No. 34 B follows the Charente and is 26 km long. Compared with the 4.2 km interpretive trail, it is considerably longer; cycling and walking also involve different ways of getting around. Both follow the Charente, but offer very different route lengths. This comparison helps distinguish a bike ride from a shorter walk.
Saint-Léger Church and swimming
Saint-Léger Church offers two specific points of interest for culture enthusiasts. Its portal features one of the rare examples of Gothic capitals decorated with figures. The church also houses the painting “La Résurrection de la fille de Jaïre,” which is listed as a historic monument. The portal draws attention to Gothic sculpture, while the painting adds a specific artwork with its own heritage designation.
The Piscine de la Doue also adds a swimming option to the selection. It has a 25 m pool approved for competitions. This gives you another specific option to consider for your stay in Mansle, alongside trails and river activities.
