Jarnac lies on a hill on the right bank of the Charente. Those choosing the town as a destination for a hotel stay can plan their trip around its main focus: historic sites, riverside routes or seasonal activities offer different experiences. It is particularly important to distinguish year-round walks from activities that are explicitly seasonal.

Historic Sites and Collections

The Maison Natale de François Mitterrand at 22 Rue Abel Guy is open to visitors. On view are living rooms, furniture and objects preserved over four generations, a garden and a cooperage. The building was erected on the site of the last Protestant temple authorized before the Edict of Nantes was revoked. The revocation took place on 18 October 1685.

The Musée François Mitterrand is located in the Espace culturel de l’Orangerie. It displays gifts that François Mitterrand received from public figures and heads of state from around the world. The history of Jarnac’s religious sites also reaches far back: the Saint-Michel crypt beneath the Église Saint-Pierre dates from the 12th century and is protected as a historic monument. From the 8th century onward, the original church belonged to the Abbey of Saint-Cybard in Angoulême.

The Temple protestant, including its interior, is fully listed as a historic monument; the listing order is dated 26 October 1998. These protected buildings and the Maison Natale, which is open to visitors, offer different ways to explore the town’s history, without covering the same period or having the same focus for a visit.

Experience Jarnac Digitally

The digital experience “Les itinéraires du temps – Jarnac à l'époque industrielle” explores the town in the 19th century. Virtual reality, historical reconstructions and interactive tasks bring its different elements together. The experience is intended to be available year-round; check whether the platform is accessible before your trip.

River, Routes and Leisure Activities

During the summer season, Jarnac Sports Canoë Kayak offers various water activities on the Charente, as well as canoe, kayak, paddleboard and large paddleboard rentals. Seasonal availability may vary. The offer includes a 5 km circular route starting and finishing in Jarnac; its operation depends on seasonal conditions.

On foot, the “Au fil de l'eau” circular route passes through Jarnac and continues to Île Madame. There is also a 3 km walking route in Jarnac. The park and the banks of the Charente invite visitors to enjoy relaxing walks year-round; maintenance or access conditions may change seasonally. If needed, check the current situation before your walk.

The Aire de loisirs de l’Île Madame has volleyball and basketball courts, children’s play equipment and a skatepark; the facilities are open to everyone. The Piscine de Jarnac has a large pool, a paddling pool and green spaces. It is open seasonally; facilities and access conditions may change. Check opening information before your visit.

Cycling and Seasonal Reasons to Visit

The Châteauneuf-sur-Charente–Cognac stage of La Flow Vélo passes through the Charente vineyards and riverside landscape. A detour to Jarnac is worthwhile. This makes it possible to combine a stay with a section of this cycling route, without implying that the stage itself passes through the town.

A local gastronomic event is the Marché aux truffes, held every year from December to February; specific dates may vary. Together with the summer-season water activities, it provides a clear seasonal contrast. Check the dates for the relevant year for the market, and seasonal availability for water activities.
