Montbron holds the Station Verte tourism label, which stands for nature-focused, authentic, people-oriented and environmentally conscious tourism. If you are looking for a hotel in Montbron, you can first consider whether architectural history, prehistoric themes, nature trails or crafts will be the focus of your trip. The places and activities differ both in theme and in the kind of experience they offer.

Cultural Heritage in Montbron

The Vieux Château is partially protected as a historic monument. Its two painted fireplaces on the first floor have been classified as historic monuments since 26 December 1985. The château was largely rebuilt in the 15th century and retains painted interior features, mullioned windows and loopholes. Decorative design and defensive architectural features thus stand side by side.

The Church of Saint-Maurice is an elegant example of Romanesque architecture, which is typical of the département. The Grotte de Montgaudier is also in the wider area around Vouthon and Montbron: evidence of human habitation there dates back exceptionally far. Finds include a particularly emblematic baton perforé, made from engraved reindeer antler, from the Tardoire Valley. If you plan to visit the cave, check access beforehand.

Prehistoric Themes at the Espace André Debénath

The Espace Préhistoire André Debénath dedicates its permanent exhibition to the history of research and prehistoric discoveries in the Tardoire Valley. Information panels introduce the topics, while original objects and casts are displayed in cases. The courtyard complements the exhibition with activities and experiments, including a painting wall and an area where visitors can practice archaeological excavation.

Two additional rooms are used for film screenings and temporary exhibitions, which are renewed every two years. On Wednesdays in July and August, children's workshops explore topics such as jewelry, flint, fire, engraving and excavation. The program also includes conferences and special visits to prehistoric sites in the area. Check current dates and options when planning your visit.

Nature Trails and Water

The Vallée de la Renaudie nature reserve stretches for six kilometers along the river and across the municipalities of Montbron, Écuras and Rouzède. Its diverse habitats are linked to the overlapping limestone and granite soils. Three discovery trails each focus on a different theme: the biodiversity trail is four kilometers long, the geology trail 3.5 kilometers and the water trail three kilometers. This lets you compare the trails by interest and length.

A different way to experience the water is the canoe-kayak trip from Menet to Montbron. It is 4.5 kilometers long and takes about an hour and a half. The approximate duration can help you plan your time; as operating conditions may change, check them before setting off.

Events and Crafts

Below the Chapelle Sainte-Marthe is the Théâtre de Verdure. It is open to everyone and serves as a venue for various artistic performances and film screenings. As the program may change, check the dates if you are planning to attend a performance.

Montbron has taken part in Les Portes du Cuir since 2013, an annual event dedicated to leather craftsmanship and the leather industry. For planning, check the dates and program for each event. At the Rencontres de l’Artisanat d’Art in the Vieux Château, around twenty professional artisans display their work in a sales exhibition; some stands also offer demonstrations.

Mills are also part of the area's local history. Fed by the Tardoire, the Moulin de Menet is a typical roller mill. The former ban mill was converted into a grain mill at the end of the 19th century. Since 2013, the Moulin de Chabrot has housed the Moulin de la Tardoire restaurant, run by Michelin-starred chef Mathieu Brudo. If you would like to eat there, check in advance whether the restaurant is currently open.
