Angeac-Champagne: History, Routes and Hotels
Accommodation in Angeac-Champagne
Angeac-Champagne can be explored through several themes: Saint-Vivien and Château de Roissac represent different periods of construction, while a road dating from Celtic times and a ford considered older than the Roman era mark routes from earlier periods. The Base de loisirs adds wet meadows, sensory gardens and an adapted path to these themes.
Building history at Saint-Vivien and Roissac
In the Middle Ages, the Church of Saint-Vivien was the seat of a parish in the Diocese of Saintes. It was completely rebuilt in the 13th century. The west portal and the canopy probably date from the 17th century. This brings together the church’s medieval role, its extensive reconstruction and probably later building elements as distinct historical points of reference.
At Château de Roissac, a distinction should be made between the site and the present building: the site has been inhabited since the 13th century, while the present château was rebuilt on the site of a Renaissance castle. The date given for the site’s habitation does not refer to the age of the present château, but to the use of the site.
The Fontaine de Roissac currently comprises seven basins, an aqueduct and a small square building.
Old routes and present-day crossings
A road from Celtic times ran through the area of the present-day commune of Angeac-Champagne. At Les Trois Pierres, the current crossing is via a stone bridge made of large limestone blocks; steps allow people to cross on foot only. The ford at Les Trois Pierres over the Ruisseau de la Motte is considered older than the Roman era. The distinction is clear when interpreting these traces of routes: for the present-day crossing, the bridge construction and access on foot only are important; for the ford, it is the cautious dating to the period before the Romans.
Wet meadows, gardens and a path at the Base
An official municipal publication from 2019 describes the Base de loisirs d’Angeac-Champagne as having been designed to preserve the site’s wet meadows. The publication also mentions three sensory gardens and a path adapted for four types of disability, providing access to the entire site. The facility thus combines a design goal for the wet meadows with specific garden and path features. Check locally before your visit whether anything about the facility has changed.
Vineyards and Cognac
The tourist experience planned for 2026 at Cognac Raison Personnelle gives visitors the opportunity to learn firsthand about work in the vineyard. It also includes visits to the cellars where the spirits mature, as well as tastings of Cognac and of spirits of various ages used to produce it. Visits require advance booking; check the dates before your trip.
