Berneuil: Hiking, Views and Romanesque Heritage
Accommodation in Berneuil
Berneuil brings together hiking, striking scenery and historic landmarks. When planning your trip, three highlights stand out: an 11-kilometre hiking route, the Lagarde viewpoint and several places with a history of their own. You can focus on different aspects: if you enjoy spending time outdoors, the hiking route and the Sentier des Coteaux offer ways to explore; if you are interested in architecture and local history, you can visit the Église Notre-Dame, a windmill and the former washhouse.
Hiking and scenery around Berneuil
The hiking route in Berneuil is 11 kilometres long. The Lagarde viewpoint offers a different perspective on the surrounding area: it is located at the highest point in the commune and the Sud Charente. From there, the view stretches over the village to Barbezieux and the slopes of Montmorélien. The route and the viewpoint therefore offer two different ways to experience the landscape—a trail to hike and a fixed spot from which to take in the surroundings.
Berneuil is characterised by limestone slopes that reach heights of more than 160 metres. Four streams run through the commune: the Maury, Grande Fontaine, Gorre and Gourdine. The valleys and some of the slopes are also part of the landscape and are designated Natura 2000 sites. Together, these features paint a picture of an area shaped by slopes, waterways and protected landscapes.
Église Notre-Dame and historic sites
The Église Notre-Dame is a Romanesque church dating from the second half of the 12th century. Inside is a 15th-century wall painting depicting Saint Louis, Louis IX, King of France and protector of the poor and sick, as well as Saint Apollonia. The church and the painting thus date from different centuries and provide two distinct historical points of interest.
Tours of the Église Notre-Dame are arranged on request through Jean Marie Arsicault. If you would like to include a tour in your plans, arrange your visit with him in advance. Another historic stop is the washhouse beside the Fontaine Notre-Dame, which once welcomed pilgrims seeking a cure for eye ailments. The Moulin à vent de Chez les Rois windmill is well preserved.
Sentier des Coteaux and local highlights
The Sentier des Coteaux is located at Place du village in the centre of Berneuil. Typical dovecotes can be seen along the trail. These add a detail of local architecture to the landscape. The washhouse, meanwhile, recalls an earlier use and differs from the paths and viewpoints described above.
The Brasserie La Burette is another local highlight. It offers certified organic beers made with ingredients sourced as locally as possible. The selection may change, so ask about the current range if you are interested. Berneuil’s appeal thus spans hiking routes and scenery, Romanesque architecture and historic uses, as well as a local product.
